I believe it to be a M1A6 muzzle cover, aka a 6inch to 4inch sewer pipe adapter with plug

There are a few M4A3's here in Mn that have MB's from 76mm or 90mm's!

The muzzle cover is there because this Sherman is preserved in fully operational condition, one of many placed on strategic positions around the country. . . . Mr. Green
