Seen over at the H.AM.B.

If an explanation surfaces, I'll post it. My best guess is that someone was trying to make class by a convoluted route. Or maybe they had some Owsley left over and it went in the coffee that morning....

Seems to have a "Stinger" hood graft, too.

My bet is, the kid had something to do with it. That smug look on his little face, he knows what's going on, and looks the manipulative type, like that "Damien" kid.

"C'mon Grampa, either put that old Flathead in Mom's Camaro or I'll hold my breath until I turn blue, and tell Gramma where you keep your stash of 'Shaved Midgets' magazines!".

So poor ol' Gramps couldn't help but do his part to spoil the child, as grandparents are wont to do. Little does he know the kid's next evil request will be to swap a 292 Y-block into Aunt Flora's '69 Roadrunner. Give 'em an inch...

If you find out the story I'd love to know! Chevy-hating Ford purist trying to make a point (and failing)?

My first guess is pretty close and probably right, is the general consensus. This is likely an example of an attempt to make class for a flathead only class. Appears to be an Offenhouser set up on a Ford engine, which could be good for something over 400 H.P.. We'll see if anything more emerges.

Dude - thanks for the tip, that is like THE Most Awesome Thread Ever.

Well except for threads in our humble lil' Pigsty here.

And that thread about the the old 30's garage restoration on garagejournal website.

Plus anything that the gang has written at Com-C in general.

So, Totally Awesome stuff!

I'm up to page 458 in that thread and have amassed the most amazing collection of early hot rod & old SoCal photos thanks to the hint about that site... so thank you, Herr Ascout!

Additionally in the "WTF" category (and there's lots of that kinda stuff there) this one caught my eye....looks like someone crafted the nose cone and pitot tube from an F-104 (or other century-series plane) onto their....whatever-it-is dragster.....

Major cool, Daddy-O!!!!

OK here's a WTF? for ya...also from the H.A.M.B., "Drag Cars in Motion" thread (possibly the most droolworthy car porn I've ever seen on the innernet)....

Clearly by the grill and front/lower body lines (and sponsorhip) this is a Chevy Nova - but what's with the fastback rear window?

If I didn't know better I'd bet someone grafted the top rear deck of an early Polara or Charger to the top-back of that poor Nova. what ya think is up here? Streamlining?

Here's the start of the 1,000 page-long thread for anyone else who wants to get sucked into days and days of drooling over sexy diggers, fuelies, gassers, floppers, altered's and gawd knows what else burning rubber and wreaking mechanical havoc....

P.S. I'll be in Pomona CA at the end of this week going to the NHRA Museum with a brand-new digital camera...can't wait!

I'm guessing '66 Dodge Charger roof with he bottom shaved. The window contour looks right.

If they just had to butcher something, couldn't it have been a Rambler Marlin? Shocked

Hey hey lookee what I found in Pomona today!!!!! The info plaque said something to the effect that there were 3 made...

It was parked alongside this tasty treat:

Along with a few other major cool machines...(sadly the pic of the Stone, Woods & Cook '41 Willys came out fuzzy) Sad

Just for you, Ascout....

Favorite drag car of all time....

I TOTALLY dig this hot rod and especially the cool radiator cap, but didn't ID the engine. Love the look of this motor, anyone know what it is? Valve covers simply say "Iskenderian".

Was a good trip. Cool

I think that's a replica car. One of the original '65 cars came to a bad end, I think (Riggle nearly came to a bad end himself). Another is reported in Sherewsberries collection. As I recall it, the '65 cars had only Hilborn injector stacks, and the '68 car had a blower. That appears to be a '68 car with injectors in your pic.

There are some vids of Bob Riggle around on Youtube at reunions and such, and he built a replica '65 car and was running it in '92. I think he'd really retired for good, now.

Nice pics, I have no idea what that engine in the rod is, best to ask over at HAMB.

Hilborn injector stacks give me wood.

Oh, I don't think there was ever a cooler looking (or sounding) car than Thompson's Challenger I. The Summers Bros. "Goldenrod" maybe got the job done, along with some others since, but Challenger I walks off with the cool factor. It (or a replica) was brought out of the museum and idled around for the film "The Worlds' Fastest Indian" and is my favorite part of the film. Laughing

Cool photos Stoopy.

You found another place close to me that I had no idea existed.

Dad's a car buff so that should be a museum he would really enjoy visiting.

As a native-born Pomonian, I'm happy to help, Wheels!

It's on the LA Fairgrounds and doesn't stick right out but you'll find it if you keep looking back over your right shoulder when you get to the group of buildings it's around. Admission is ridiculously affordable at something like $8 for AAA members. And be sure to bring along xtra money for T-Shirts if your Dad likes the old dragstrips and cars too...
