I can say I have looked through every thread page on this site goin all the way back to the first one. I did see this a few times however. Something about M114A1E1/M114A2s that were on displa on bases having their powered turrets removed an placed on M901/M981s? I saw one example where the turret was removed an the 20mm mounts were dumped in the back of the M114.

Can anyone tell me about this?

Roy A. Lingle?

Roy has had a spot of bother health-wise recently and may not be checking in regularly. He has seemed, thankfully, to have weathered the storm as I've seen him on FB. I'll try to remember to message him about having a look at this thread.

Give him my best. I thought something was up when the last time he signed in was Feb 2015.

Thanks.

Interesting how the M901 came to be.

Created to take advantage of high terrain and the inability of Soviet Tanks to elevate high enough to engage targets. European theater/ Fulda Gap primary driving force behind it. Was built in three months by the Army using already proven systems. They used the M114 turret/cupola and added the "Hammerhead" to it. Enabled the vehicle to hide behind terrain and depress up to 20 degrees to engage. A LTC by the name of Robert Enyart actually built the prototype with his team. Why you see so many M114's on display without their turrets. We had two in our Platoon when I was in Germany (84-86) and were not liked by their crews, mostly because they were very under powered and slow in the hills. But when used what they were designed for was a game changer to Soviet tactics and planning.

Joe D is correct.

The M114A1 used the XM26 turret.

The M114A1E1 (A2) used the XM27 powered turret and was used to build the M901.

The M114 here at Ft. Bliss was an A2 and the gun mount is inside.

Was the XM26 turret used on anything else or trialed on anything else? I presume the M27 was also used on the M981?

XM-26 was not used on anything else, THAT I know of.

I have no facts, but I think the XM-27 was a XM-26 that was upgrade from manual operation to powered operation. From the outside, I can not tell the different between the two.

My 2 cents
