Why the Germans used captured Allied tanks :

Their own kept falling over!

Yes mark IV female in fact the Germans had at the end of the war only about 20 tanks of ther one : A7V see above . The rest where all recuperated on the battlefield ( french and british)

In fact the first battle between tanks went on in Villers-Bretonneux on 24 april 1918 where the Germans attacked with there A7V's and ran into some mark IV's that where doing a counterattack

The photo of the A7V was actually taken on 24 April 1918, following the aforementioned first tank vs. tank combat.

Not a great beginning.....
