An offshoot of the "M48A5 at the Armed Forces Retirement Home" thread (which I was hunting for pics to support) got me onto this topic with an interesting (well, to me anyway) link for oodles of former Nike launch sites with lots of links to pics from then (and some now). If you like this old "cold war" stuff (and I grew up in it and now have a facination with it) it's become sort of the "modern ruin" to look back on. Lots of links-within-the-link to look over, if you like this sort of thing. Sort of like Geoff Waldens Cold War Sites on his ThirdReichInRuins site, but concentrated on the ADA batteries (I had no idea there were so many). Many were overseas so it's international as well as well as hugely domestic (and it was huge...I didn't realize...Detroit was ringed).

There's a book for cold war ruins out in the UK, too. "Google" for "cold war sites" and you find lots of interesting stuff. If anyone finds some similar links, I'd appreciate your posting...I love looking at this old stuff, especially if it's got "then and now" pics.

Have fun, there's a lot in here...

In 1960, my family moved to Limestone Maine from El Paos Tx, as my father was assigned to a battery of Nike Hercules in Northern Maine. He was ADA for most of his career.

Perhaps why I know more than I care to on Herc/Ajax/Redeye/Stinger/Hawk/Improved Hawk/Vulcan/Sgt York/Patriot.... For a career Tanker, that is... Mr. Green

Thanks, Piney...seems that McGuire site is the best preserved BOMARC precisely because of the fire and nuke contamination and is an historic site (still owned/controlled by the AF). Still has the launchers installed. Worst nuke accident here until Three-Mile Island, apparently. Very interesting stuff!

add two site locations to that-- one was north and the other south in the city proper... as it was meant to be, if you were to visit the locale you wouldnt even know it...

okay, back again, you peaked my curiousity doug, looking up more of this stuff... in 1961 detroit had 16 battery sites in the surrounding area. to think i have been to many of these areas and hadnt realized what had been there.
very interesting to think that the industrial area of detroit was so vital for the time period (and it protected windsor, dont forget our friends from across the river).

Wow! doug, there is alot out there on this history! thanks for bringing this up.
my family has hunted near the algonac site ( the site is near beaverdam drain), i have done some shooting in that area hanging at a friends farm. there was a site near occ/ou were i finished my minor. obviously, there was the battery at SANG that i drove by when i worked there. there was even a site over in bingham/franklin...

today, you wouldnt think that we would be interested in defending detroit...
