I remember a German WW2 General saying something like "the Russian climate is a following of natural disasters : drought in Summer, ice and snow in Winter, a lot of mud in Autumn and Spring". It is easy for those of us who live in more habitable terrain, to ignore the much less hospitable parts. The Russians don't have that luxury. They have enormous open plains with hundreds of feet of topsoil, and huge marshes where the water table is on the surface. Necessity is the mother of invention.
