Chrysler tank arsenal
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Chrysler tank arsenal. Thousands of rivets are used in the production of one of the huge thirty-eight ton M-3 tanks. Whenever possible rivets are replaced by welded sections, but throughout much of the tank, as in the side plates on which this riveter is working, the steel plate is too heavy for welding. The riveting itself, a twenty-five ton

west-front:

That must be one of the rare "M3A3E2 Jumbo Grant" assault tanks being assembled. I believe that a normal M3 Medium would have weighed in somewhere around 29-30 tons, but the picture text says it is one of "the huge thirty-eight ton M-3 tanks." The additional weigh is surely from the extra armor fitted to the assault tank version.

Wink

Does anyone else think that the photo has been retouched? The area around the side door, where you can see the thickness of the armor, looks a bit fake to me. Do you suppose that they enhanced the thickness of the side armor for this photo? It looks nearly three inches thick here, as opposed to the 1.5 inches on the real thing.

Geez, maybe there was an assault tank version . . .

you don't suppose it was part of a misinformation campaign do you Rolling Eyes After all Life magazine was available in places like Havana, Lisbon, etc where it was a cheap intelligence source. Look at all the pictures made of M6 heavy tanks in late '41 and '42. You would think there were going to be some in every division.

Information is a weapon
