M60A3 & M48 in Ozark, Alabama
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The register shows two M60A3's. Is the M48 an A1? I don't know the difference.

Mark,

I actually documented these two last year IIRC. This M48 is an A1 early that was converted from the Chrysler open cupola to enclosed M1 model.

M48A1

IAW TM 9-7012, M48C's were the first batch with substandard armor in the frontal divers area with a small hatch, destining them as training tanks. M48's had a small drivers hatch and the M48A1's a large hatch. Later when the M1 cupola was introduced into production, an order went out requiring all large hatch A1's equipped with the Chrysler cupola would be upgraded to the M1 version. These turrets can be ID'd by either the casting number or by the adapter spacer between the cupola and turret opening. On A3/A5's with the Vision Block ring you have to use the casting number. For me, I ID an early M48 by the hatch, since even though an order went out, there will always be that chance one fell through the cracks and didn't get the upgrade. Seen it with M60's.
