Romanian Military Museum: Shermies, MkIV's, an' stuff....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Do you know what's up with that red color that the two vehicles were painted in? Some kind of parade livery or what? It was obviously faded from exposure, but it's hideous.

As these vehicles were all a rust & greenish colour a few years ago I'd say it was some sort of undercoat/rust convertor. They just seem to be taking their time applying another coat - nothing unusual as money is really tight at musuems in Romania.

Yeah, I've seen M26 Pattons with exactly the same color.

OK, Whatiz? Couldn't find any plates identifying as Hanomag or Skoda, or anybody else....who built these? Interleaved road wheels make me think German.

One thing not conveyed by the pics is the size. I mean, like M60A1 size (and maybe longer). This is a big vehicle. The trailer is not attached, but is displayed as part of this unit, (but I think more likely the one next to it...to follow). The trailer contained a generator.

The red Rumanian tank is an R-2 (their version of the Czech LT-35) and the SPG is the TACAM R-2 which is a Soviet 76.2mm gun mounted on the R-2 chassis.

This picture shows how awful.it.truely.is:

The R2 again:

...and detail on the TACAM. Sorry about the bottle.

First, a very sad Sherman. From the looks of the burned track but more-or-less intact road wheels, I'd guess it's been pieced together from various bits. How and why it came to be so symetrically chopped up in back I have no idea...ballistic testing of cut plate from the rear quarter panels seems unlikely, so maybe it was used to uparmor something else...

My guess this is an ex-Soviet Army M4A2. There is a similar cut-up hulk in Belgium. After the war, the scrapman started to cut it up for scrap. When he was halfway, the village bought the rest off him and put it up for display. Could be the same sort of thing happened to this Sherman.

Thanks for the pics!

Regards,
Hanno

Doug, great pics! Would love to see some of the artillery too!

Neil

Stand by, Neil. It's comin'...gonna' do the armor first (I really should have created a new album for this...didn't realize I had so many pics)

Thanks, Jeff...but no, I didn't get any serial numbers and was pressing my luck by crawling around already where I probably shouldn't 'a been. (Climbing on broken concrete rubble in bid'ness' shoes is not recommended, either...especially loafers....it's a miracle I didn't break my ankle).

Here is Jim's old Abi still up on the stands...interior view also:

...And now, for some modern stuff. T-55 and up. I have display plaques, too, but I'm racking up a bunch of pics...maybe I'll montage them.
Sorry about the bushes, but I'm not the landscaper....I did the best I could while wandering around in "lion country".

Doug,
Your pictures are awesome! Every time I take pictures I try to do as well as you. I plan on sending those Sherman pictures to Joe DeMarco. Did you by chance get a serial number or any numbers off that tank in your hurry to not be aprehended by the soldiers? haha.

Certainly a lot of cleaning going on - in the 80s you could have hardly seen the tanks at because of the bushes/weed growing up around them.

Cool

Sad to say, the modern stuff has a hedgerow of bushes (though nicely trimmed) growing to chest high level around both sides, so a clear view of the track and suspension is impossible. I'll be posting some pics of those later. The older items are more clearly displayed. They have so much that space is a problem...the artillery (and there is a LOT) is crowded willy-nilly into the yard. The good thing is that access to most pieces is good.

The smallest (and cutest) of the many wheeled AFV's here:

Thats an Abi. Last time I saw that particular one it was on jackstands next to the cut-away T-34/85 and in bad condition. They are obviously engaged in a program of cleaning up the vehicles there.

There are three versions all well illustrated on JED.

Cool

Nope, this is another one. The one on jackstands with no wheels and gutted interior is still there. I got pics of it, too.

They had a lot of ground torn up relaying pipe or conduit of something...no work seen on vehicles, but on the facility itself, which is still impressive, and as you know, big.
