Very nice shot of an under-appreciated aircraft!

It was sort of the A-6 Intruder of it's day...all-weather/night attack with a big radar and fair amount of firepower, but definitely not sexy or fast. Panthers did the day attack, Sky Knights were for the hours of darkness (but were used early in VN for day attack).

Skyknights were supposed to be a true night fighter. The aircraft was so big the Navy decided it wasn't appropriate for carrier deployment. The ones in Vietnam were used as ECM aircraft. Interesting 'feature' was that instead of ejection seats they had 'Slide tunnels' which the crew would use in emergencies (Not very useful at low altitude or when landing or taking off ) |
