New PDF file : M7 and M7B1 Priest
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi P-O! Hi Folks!

- the_shadock

a question now :

could we tell the difference between an M7 and an M7B1 from the front, without any photo of the rear?

(maybe by the shape of the differential cover, or the running gear?)

Front view of the running gear would not help.

A three piece differential would MOST LIKELY be a M7.
A one piece differential would MOST LIKELY be a M7B1.

The type of differential, if factory orginal, would help, but due to the inter-changeably is not a 100% sure thing. If the date of a photo is known, that would help some if it is earlier during the war, vis later in the war. A M7 that remained in service for most of the war could have a one piece replacement differential and the later type heavier bogies. Post war Musuem examples are the worst for mix and match parts.

The only way to be sure is a side view so we can see if the vehicle has the shorter M3 hull vis the longer M4A3 hull.

which M7 Priest are you talking about there?

The one listed at Generaal Maczek Museum, Breda.
Ivo has currently 3 M7B1's, One in his own collection, the second one (the one in the picture) was/is for sale, and a thirth is current been rebuild and should go to a museum in France.

Sometimes yes, it all depends on when they where build.
If the pullpit has one ring, its always a M7. If the lights are high on the hull, again always M7. For the rest I've seen All types of differentials on all types of Priest's.
The rear view is always the best, no chance off mistakes possible (exempt human error )

M7B2 survivors.
The list may contain mistakes, as a large part of the target wrecks in Germany were removed from the fire ranges (AFAIK ??) and went to museum or collections.

thanks, I've added it to the list today. It has the M3 Lee suspension and riveted lower hull.
