Hetzer recovered in Poland
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This looks like the first part of the Hetzer recovery story.

The Hel peninsula was a German defensive pocket with units encircled there since the fall of Gotenhafen (Gdynia) in March 1945. These units didn't formally surrender until May 10th 1945. The Hetzer was probably ditched in the water on purpose to avoid capture.

The peninsula was also the last foothold of the Polish forces in 1939.

I once saw a documentary about shipwrecks that said tha the Baltic sea
has a low saline content, it may explain why the vehicle seems reasonably
intact.

I still wonder what could have caused that level of corrosion?

Salt water, it was recovered from beach on Baltic Sea.

Yes I know, but the saline content is so low in the Baltic Sea that the level of corrosion doesn't seem normal. Maybe rock salt or some other chemical reaction in the seabed?

It was immersed for the thick end of 60 years, so it's not so much a case of being surprised how much corrosion, but how little!
Quite a lot of what you put down as corrosion, is also concretion, layers of marine growth. I've seen a cannon pulled out of the sea, with a 2" thick layer, easily knocked off with a hammer, to expose the metal beneath, that started to oxidise (ie rust) immediately.
