Lost & Found on Ft Knox....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Don,
Thanks for the Knox update! You have all been very busy. Nice find in the M3 hulls.
I'd love to see what Aberdeen still has hidden in the woods and marshes there! Rick

Ahhhh....the memories. I loved being in the field at Ft. Knox when the trees were bare. Not hot, no insects, a nice 55gal. drum of burning wood and cardboard to warm your hands by.....good times!

Aluminum roadwheel...Bah, Humbug!

Steel casings= crap

Brass casings= gold!

If a good 76mm brass casing should become available, I'd be in the market for it at reasonable price. I have the shot round to put in it for show. Wink

It's rusty enough that a 75mm brass case would probably do.

Don, are the cans propellant containers or the complete round "jungle" cans? If the latter, I would be interested in getting some info on them.

Thx,
KL

Propellant containers, as best as I we can tell. Found a hand full of them but most were pretty corroded. We did save a couple of the best ones....

I'll be onpost on Saturday (Vol Workday), what are you interested in?

Well, there shouldn't be any 105mm propellant cans . . . (I got the size from the AFTA site.) All US 105mm rounds were fixed or semi-fixed cartridges, not separate loading projectiles and propellant charges. As such they are either stored in fiber tubes or the single round "jungle" cans.

I guess knock the mud off and get the length and diameter and maybe some close-up pictures so we can figure out what they are.

thx,
KL

Sounds like a plan. I'll see what I can do...

Truthfully I really don't know what they are, we just guessed since thats what they look like....

I hope to get out to the M3A1's location, but that depends if we can get an escort. I know the general location, but its in a limited access area...

BTW: we also have located a turret for an M4A3(105), more to follow on that once I can get a first hand view...

Jungle can:

They are 6-1/8 inches in diameter. The body is obviously a little shorter than the dimension shown, looks to be around 34-5/8, 34-3/4 long.

Jungle can:

Kurt

Yup measurements are 34 3/4 long and 6 1/8. Interior has 2 'shoulders' down the interior of the tube. I think you 'nailed it'.
