Any chance on doing a T-34-85 survivors list?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I know of about 13 T-34-85's in the US and was wondering if there was any thought about creating a listing of all surviving T-34-85's. I know it would be a massive file, but very interesting to see all the survivors in all different conditions.

Would we be counting the ones still on active service?

I bet a few can be found, somewhere. Laughing

Sometimes I feel we should differentiate between "preserved" and "surviving" vehicles. For example, a tank in a target range, in the middle of a Pacific island or inside a sunken ship is "surviving", but not "preserved". In a way I would say that a tank in active service isn't "preserved" too Smile

Back to your specific request, a few random thoughts:

- The PDF format doesn't handle long list of data very well. It doesn't "scale", it becomes hard to read and to update

- There are so many T-34/85s around the world that the only way to approach this would be to focus on a specific area like "North America" or "West Europe"

- Eastern Europe is so full of T-34/85s that I wouldn't even approach that

- You may give it a try by yourself, it's easy, just ask Pierre-Oliver to provide you with an example of MS Word file and the basic guidelines we use to create the PDF

I can say that maybe in next year I will try to finish the register devoted "Russian T-34/85 medium tanks preserved around the world".
I worked on it in some years ago but in August 2009 I have stooped. To that time I create a register with 307 pages - over 600 surviving T-34/85 - and on that moment it wasn't even 100% finished.

In USA (data from 2009):

T-34/85 – Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, McMinnville, OR (USA
T-34/85 – Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, McMinnville, OR (USA)
T-34/85 – American Armoured Foundation, Tank Museum, Danville, VA (USA)
T-34/85 – Camp Roberts Historical Museum and Museum Annex, CA (USA)
T-34/85 – Threat Training Facility, Nellis Air Force Base, NV (USA)
T-34/85 – Virginia Museum of Military Vehicles, Nokesville, VA (USA)
T-34/85 – Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor, Fort Knox, KY (USA)
T-34/85 – Jacques Littlefield Collection, Portola, CA (USA)
T-34/85 – Aberdeen U.S. Army Ordnance Museum, MD (USA)
T-34/85 – Aberdeen U.S. Army Ordnance Museum, MD (USA)
T-34/85 – private collection, location unknown (USA)

I agree with Massimo, the only thing that could be done "easily" would be to list the survivors in Western Europe and in Nothern America. Other areas in the world would be far too complicated to deal with.

Or make three lists T-34/85 tanks. Soviet, post-war Czechoslovakia and Poland T-34/85. Shocked

Massimo:

At your urging, I have started a list. I have photos of over 20 T-34-85s in the United States of America already.

Once I get approval from some people, I will make it public.

What are the key identifying features of the wartime and Post war manufactured T34-85? 85s are very common and they appear for sale regularly in the UK but a friend has pointed out that most if not all of they sold aver the last few years on the open market have not been 44/45 production but post war Polish machines.... How to tell?

A key identifying feature of the Czechoslovak and Polish built T-34s is the smooth turret casting compared to Russian built ones. Secondly, a number of hull fittings, such as headlights, attachments for wading equipment and the rear racks for smoke canisters and fuel drums are additional identifying features. Also most would have the spider web cast roadwheels.
A stock Russian made tank would have a rather rough turret casting and would be of any of the major types, one headlight (or one IR and one white light, depending on whether it is an upgraded tank), plus the '60s upgrade hull fittings - fuel transfer pump box, smoke canister racks and fuel drum racks - are different from Polish and Czechoslovak tanks. Roadwheels could be drawn concave, spider web or starfish.
