The Armata T14. Strange name for a Russian tank and the hull looks like a Leopard 2. An interesting concept, I'm not sure that automatic turrets have been much of a success in the past...

I've been wondering when the necessary technology matured sufficiently for the unmanned turret to become a reality.

If you want the crew to be reasonably safe in a tank today, you really need to get them away from the ammo and put them in a nacelle surrounded by heavy armour on all sides.

But only a two-man crew? I'd thought you need commander-gunner-driver for an effective crew, even with an un-manned turret?

It's got a three man crew. Gunner in the middle, TC on the right and driver on the left. That's as much as I can guess from the pictures.

The Jan-feb 1996 issue of ARMOR has an interesting article pointing out all the issues presented by an unmanned turret. I am certainly no expert, but I would think the rapid advance in miniaturized digital camera technology over the past ten years would do a lot to solve the issue of reduced crew visibility and situational awareness when stuck down in the hull of a unmanned turret vehicle.
