Updated M21 Rifle? The AFV official reloading thread.....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The 168 grain bullet was originally designed for the Springfield 1903 30.06, and was my favourite in reloading for my .'06..(Ruger M77 Featherweight)I used the 168 Speer boat tail and allways had a sack full of 110 grain hollow points for crows and varmints...
When re-using my brass, after every second re-use I would, before resizing, aneal the brass..Heat the brass up with a torch or open flame untill red...then let cool.... re size then and tumble to repolish..
Your brass will last forever..

a more precise method of annealing is to mark the case necks with a 700 degree welder's crayon or Tempilac liqiud and stand them head down in a tray of water about a third of the case deep. when the mark or liquid melts then simply tip over the case into the water. You should also pay close attention to overall case lengh and neck thickness as these will both change ad can lead to highr pressures if not corrected

Hi Jeff..
There are different ways to anneal the brass for reuse, and I wasn't accurate enough to get into the finer points..
I figgured that if I could shoot a group of three at 300 Meters that I could cover with my thumb, that was good enough for me..

Alex:

Where do you shoot in and around Ottawa? Stittsville, EOHC, Connaught ? There is a milshoot in Smiths Falls first weekend of June. Great chance to drag out the old locker queens - two classes this year, pre 1945 and semis.

ML-eh...
DOn't shoot anymore..too much hassle..
Last serious shooting was in Sask. back in the '80's..
Since moving to Ontario, other than some skeet and trap shooting a few years ago,I have only fired one round...a .22 short through my scoped up Ruger 10/22 at a ground hog in my garden that needed shooting....I don't have to elaborate on the results but have you ever seen a three eyed ground hog..??

Hi alex
I didn't mean to be critical only helpful. In general heating a case to red hot is to hot and can render it unsafe. a good dicussion of case neck annealing can be found here

www.6mmbr.com/annealing.html

safe is always better than sorry in reloading

Jeff
Good artical on annealing...
Thanks.
Basically the way I was doing it..Never had any problems with cracked or blown out cases,so must have been doing something right.

All you gun nuts out there:

Much as I was heartbroken to have to had surrendered my M-1 in order to get the new M-14, I think in 1963 (?) I came to really like the new rifle in spite of the plasticky-looking perforated top of the foregrip, after a couple of range visits. People can be brought round to appreciate new things, and since many of the visitors to this board are not exactly conversant with modern (1898 and later) long firearms, discussions of this type can certainly be helpful, through the context, in their understanding of basic ballistics, weapons types and configurations, and apply these to the much heavier but related field of tank Main Gun ballistics.

Even as a Curmudgeon (In Armor), I can put up with yer crazy recycling efforts and related shenanigans, just as long as you 'Bangy-Thingies' don't get carried away. I'd much rather you and your knowlege would all stay here, rather than hie off to some esoteric Reloader Paradise. site.

My .22 cents worth,
Russ

PS - nice collection, Oletop!

Talking about change, I liked the M1 and later the M14..but the one thing that couldn't figuer out was why Garand spent so much time screwing around with that 10/8 round clip loading system, he had the BAR and its magazines right there in front of him. Instead he put in a whole hand full of parts that wouldn't be needed with a magazins feed system. I'm dickering around for a M1 right now.

Good enough for me, Russ
"...By the awesome powers vested in the office of Moderator, I hereby fix and declare the "reloading poll" results a landslide victory in favor of a designated reloading thread and this here appears to be it. So there."
Affixed this date, hereto:

(I think it was the annealing discussion what settled it...gave us one o' them thar fait accompli thingys...)

But just think of all the folks since who would have been deprived of the experience of suffering "M1 thumb" first-hand! Laughing

The only rational explanation that comes to my mind is the daunting prospect of making all those magazines, many surely to see one-time-use, for an entire army. Also, I suspect, that the transition to semi-auto from bolt action was already a bitter pill for the advocates of the instrumentality of deliberate marksmanship and magazines might have seemed promiscuous, somehow (not altogether unlike the transition to full-auto weapons for riflemen some years later...."give em' enough bullets and they won't bother to aim"...or something like that). Of course, there's nothing like the prospect of carrying all that ammo and recognizing severe limits of resupply in some situations (like Vietnam, in numerous circumstances) to make even a full-auto soldier mindful of his expenditures....

But I'm jus' speculatin' 'bout a hypothesis.....

M-1 thumb sufferer my self, but you only do it once. The most reasonable priced source ( and I'm horrified by what passes as reasonable at the moment) is the CPM which replaced the old DCM. If you qualify you can get one through them. heres a link

www.odcmp.com/

and to think I was outraged when I had to pat $175 for my old one

Yup, I called the CPM, do you know that the NRA is not qualifying shooting organzation by their rules..as for the M1 thumb, I took one look and said thats not for me, not once has it happened (so far).. when I join the Corps (1960) the rifle you were issued in boot camp went with you or was shipped to your commands unless you went to the "Rock", the 2nd M1 I was issued was a true shooting beauty and had a fine grained stock with a thin pistol grip, I loved going to the range with it, I had a friend who was a rifle marksmenship instructor who taught me the finner points of shooting.
