last surviving duplex drive sherman in the world
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Chris! Hi Folks!

- Chris_C
There was a show on Discovery or something a while back about the DD tanks. It concluded that the trouble wasn't necessarily the distance; the current turned the tanks, and the waves impacting at an angle overwhelmed the support brackets, causing them to sink. I dunno how accurate their conclusions are, but it's an interesting take on the issue.

I saw that show. If I remember right that was Dr. Attwater who said that. It is the first time I have heard that. Maybe he has seen something new that hasn't been reported before.

I remember that show. They were headed off course from the correct landing spot on the beach and made the correction and the current/waves did cause the sinking.

I can't even imagine putting any kind of armor to sea and expect it to float but I guess a large amount did make it.

Amazing!

Perhaps one reason why the British DDs were more successful is that many were M4A4s and their longer hull meant increased freeboard of 30cm at the front (bow) and 15cm at the rear (stern).

If I remember correctly the British didn't launch their DD's as far out
