DONTOS-M551 Gunner!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Dead Batteries!!!, I almost had beer come out my nose when I read that! Those BA30-30's dont have much of a life anyway. I actually have some of the old OD green "issue" batteries still laying around somewhere. Now every battery is just what you'd buy off the shelf in appearance.
Green D-cells, commonly called 'green s&%t' at Langley AFB when I was there. We used go through boxes of them every night. Each Crew Chief would get a flashlight with new batteries and six spare batteries at the beginning of every shift. Most crew chiefs also got a 6 volt flashlight and a couple spare batteries for that also.

Every now and then a new officer would look at the number of batteries we got each month and decide that they were getting taken home or something and force us to start a 'one for one' exchange policy and for about a week each of the shop tool cribs would have to turn in batteries to get new ones. They would come in literaly by the bucketfull and we would have to save them to show the concerned officer. One time the new 1st LT told us to do 1 for 1 then went on leave for several weeks. We decided to fill up the area behind his desk with all the dead batteries until he got back Smile

Those worthless BA-30's,
I also spewed my drink when I read 'Weeds comment. About the only thing good about them was you could bust them open and carve a temporary motor brush from the carbon rod inside. Pre-Alkaline. Remember, Tank was deadlined if it had 2 blower motors inop on the same side. This was pre- VDSS air cleaners on M60's.

Weed, I might be able to help you with your M551 repairs. I sent you a PM.

In 1977 (I think) some of the M551 crews came to watch our M109s and 110s shoot at Fort Bragg. One 8"" Baty had a shiney new CO who was at the OP for the regstering of the guns on the first day of shooting, when the first shot was fired he couldn't see the impact of the shot, one of the old hands Arty Co suggested he have the gun fire a 2nd shot, which was also lost...the next day the local news paper report that hunter in a open hunting area on Fort Bragg reported two very large shells had land in the hunting area, I guess some needed to change their underwear,
any way the sqd maint chief invited me to watch a shoot with their vehicles, the first time I saw a M551 shoot and rear up lifting the first three roadwheels off the ground, I left..I was muddering something like "any vehicle that behaves like that can't be safe".
