Post subject: Data transfer options?

Man, it's getting harder and harder to do the old "put the old hard drive in the new system as a slave and copy yur old data over" thing.

My new PC uses that funky-cool (and wicked-performing) SATA interface, lil' teeny red cable. I thought, cool, I'll take the old WD 160-Gig HD from the old system, plug 'er into the IDE interface (basically disconnect the DVD and CD-ROM and use that i'face", and move everything over...

Problem! BIOS saw the drive but XP sure wouldn't. I mean, it shows up in Device Mangler but it sure won't mount the partition and show it as drive D. I'm very certain it's because how I tricked XP into seeing the thing as one big 160G partition anyway way back when I first set it up. XP wanted a 137Gig max (see Hangman's "Large Hard Drives thread here). Who knows, it being flagged as an XP boot drive could have caused some contention too. I tried about 6 or 7 ways from Sunday with different jumper settings, BIOS settings, etc, and finally decided to hang it up.

Imagine my supreme dismay when I slid it back in the original PC and......it wouldn't boot!!! Oh cripes! Data....documents....old emails.......family pix.......my CFS3 and FS9 ZIP files collection.....not to mention a coupla year's worth of screenshots (yeah I'm sentimaental and keep all that). One thing is, I picked up Norton Ghost with the new PC so I can do a complete image backup to DVD's once I get everything settled down.

Long story short is that by going to an entirely different jumper config and eliminating the other smaller slave drive that was in the original PC, it's booting again now, and all is well for the moment. But I'm not moving that drive again! OH...and that smaller slave drive? New PC wouldn't see it either...hmmmmm.......

So......what other decent (fairly fast) and efficient methods can y'all recommend? The old PC has a CD-ROM burner (no DVD) so I can put buncha stuff on CD....but thats likely a ton o' CD's. Also, thinking that once I get the wireless network card I have installed and working, I could do a little home-network thing and move stuff over point-to-point.

Sure would be cool if you could just string a USB cable between two systems, have 'em see each other, and start shoving data around. Never read if you could tho.

Opinions/Ideas, anyone?

Ohhh...sorry, have a habit of asking the question and then researching....

USB point-to-point can be done (never looked too hard at this newfangled USB stuff, D'uhh)...and an interesting multi-part dealy on it can be found here:

Anyone ever done this? If not, I'll probably guinea-pig it and report back how it works.....

D'oh!

Geez....sometimes, you don't see the solution until you ask the question.

Both systems have regular network cards in 'em, LOL!

A crossover cable between 'em, a little TCP/IP configuration, and I should be shovin' data across at 100Mbs instead of 12 that USB provides. And I can string it across two rooms in the house for the time it takes for that.

I need to do that myself, but going through a router. Any need for the network neighborhood setup? or can it just be TCP/IP?

Depends, from what I've learned. The network connection wizrd should pop up and walk you through it. Not gonna go through the router myself, if I can help it. Got a 50' ethernet cable that I'm gonna plug into a coupler and then to a crossover cable (so the whole schmeil loks like a x-over) and plug the two NIC's together. From what I've read, should work fine and it seems simple.

LOL!! Stoopy glad we could help out. Sounds like that will work just fine to me .

When i run a router i used the router software to link all the computers togther and it seamed to work real good.

Yup, once again, good ol' Com-C, just by it's very presence, delivered a very good solution!

Hmm! Good idea there, CrashEd! I'll check into it if the NIC-to-NICS connection doesn't pan out. This is gonna be a one-night shot (I hope) and then, the old gal gets wiped out, a fresh WinXP install (with NORMAL partition sizes, grrrrr!) and a Linksys wireless E'net card. Then she starts her ground-based retirement with Age of Mythology, etc.....gonna be kinda like gardening for her in retirement I guess. She just got one last big mission ahead of her is all!

Hey guess what....the new PC doesn't come with a old-school gameport of course...just tons of USB and Firewire ports etc. So now my faithful old (gameport i'face) ThrustMaster rudder pedals and CH Flightstick Pro are disconnected, sitting in a corner.....damn I hate to see them go.......I'm thinking about having them bronzed and hanging 'em on the wall with a plaque. Had 'em since FS95 and Aces Over the Pacific, flew the Beech Baron round the world with 'em, shot down thousands of AI planes and I dont know how many online pilots (at least 10, I think lol).....just can't throw 'em in the basement ya know?

Yeah, I'm thinking about it. They're just so beat up, been a lotta miles put on 'em. Springs in the rudder pedals broke long ago (kinda cool though if you need constant hard rudder input, like when one wingtip is shot off), the potentiometer is scratchy and twitchy and it's hard to get right rudder.....I can rotate a helo to the left like nobody's business tho. The Flightstick's springs are pretty well worn out too, it still centers but I didn't realize how light the springs were until I went and got a USB stick. Like night n'day.

Maybe I'll overhaul both of 'emand put it all back in service. None of it ever really broke, that's the thing I can't get over!

google to the rescue!! smartftp and awaaaaaay we go. And I hope you didn't get a Logitech joystick, had real bad luck with them. Three in a row went bad after about 2-3 months. All of them the right side just quit on me.

coming in late as usual, but i can actually help you out a bit with your dilema on the pedals...i love the CH pedals and althought they do have a USB version (I acutally have both...cause after i got the USB, i realised I needed gameport to connect to my joystick first...but that's a whle nother thing in itself)

back to the point at hand though, the good ol' RadioShack has a solution for everything and this time it's part # 26-164

it's like $17 so it's almost half the cost of a cheap joystick, but it's for nastalgia's sake



click on that image and it should hook you up...i think

but yea i found that sucker back in the day when i was trying to get my old FCS from thrustmaster to work with the new USB of like 5 years ago or whatever

only thing is for the pedals it shuld be fine, for the stick you might miss out on a little functionality because it makes a generic joystick and i can't remember how many buttons it has, but it's prolly worth a shot

in hindsight i'm remebering that you don't have a laptop so yea, CrashEd's thing about the PCI gameport would work too, also though if your stuff is in bad shape it might be worth it to just get the new line from CH in the future, but this might be one of the cheaper intermediate steps

especially cause i just like having them around, you know, us engineers can get into trouble when we have a generic thing that lets us put stuff that shouldnt be go together, together...lol start thinking, what else can i use this for.....

Excellent! Really useful info Holmes, Thanks!

OK and engineers also like to have a plan too....so the plan is to refurb the springs in both and also the pot in the rudder pedals.....get some nice teflon sliders on the bottom of the swingarm too. Then use this Radio Shack doohicky to hookumup.....will use the current USB stick uin the meantime....sounds like a weener to me!
