1st Cav Museum walk around for Neil...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Neil, I stopped by the 1st Cav museum today with my boys and did a "walk-around "for you. I also got a museum map that shows where each piece is located by name. Remeber, there is an M151 jeep, M4A3 (105)VVSS, and an M43 SP out front of the museum parking lot as well. So if you have any questions, let me know. Enjoy!

Jeff, many thanks!

A few questions for clarification, especially since you have the map:
1) Is that an M3 half-track?
2) Any sign of an M5 Stuart? If I am correct, those are two M3s above?
3) Any sign of an M20 armored utility vehicle (based on the M8 Greyhound but without a turret)?
4) Isnt there an M26 Pershing there?
5) No M40 155mm SPG I assume?
6) Are there two M59 APCs, or is one an M84 mortar carrier?
7) No T43/M103 heavy tank? (I assume this is a mistaken duplication of the one at the 4th ID museum)
Cool No T-62 to be found huh? Probably another erroneous duplication.

Neil,
According to the map, they show the following;
- Half Track is an M-3A1
- No M5 Stuart, just an M3 and M3A1 (M5 is at 4th ID museum)
- No M20
- M26 Pershing may belong to 1st Cav Collection, but I posted pics of it at the Korea memorial, which is located at 1st Cav HQ's, none at the museum.
- M40 American? There was an M44 and the M43.
- No M84, both are M59's, (M84 is at the 4th ID museum).
- M103 is at 4th ID museum.
- No T-62 at museum location.

What are you still missing? Also, the 1st Cav museum lists the following as coming soon!
- M-2 IFV Bradley
- M-998 HMMWV
- FOX Light Armored Car
- UH-60 Blackhawk
- 0-1 Bird Dog
- CH-47 Chinook
They also have a jeep and truck behind a fence being worked on and from what I understand, a Half Track for parade use thats kept stored.

Jeff, that was it. Many thanks again! I'll need to double-check for any clerical errors in the draft and see if I can get it uploaded later today!

Neil, Is this all the vehicles you are listing?! Because there are more around the post scattered around. I still need to get to the tan soviet BMP that I thought I saw down a side street. There is also a 4 wheeled armored car in front of the MP station and an armored jeep at another MP station. The 62nd Engineers have an armored bull-dozer that looks neat. Are you only concerned with armor or everything?

Jeff, just armored vehicles - no thin-skinned, no towed artillery. The 1st Cav Museum was the last major museum I needed a good list for. V1.0 is now available for download. I will continue to update as I receive more info - so keep it coming!

BTW, I take it there is not another M36B1 at the 1st Cav Museum? Looks like another duplicate listing...

Neil, do you have the listing for the armored vehicles on Ft Irwin? I have a complete listing to include available serial and USA numbers.

Post subject: Re: 1st Cav Museum walk around for Neil...

Here's what I show at Ft Irwin;
M4A3 serial 2938 ( by 1/11th HQ)
M74 serial 74159 (In front of RSS 11th ACR HQ)
M26 serial S893 (by 1/11th HQ)
M47 serial 1560 (1/11th ACR motorpool guard)
M47 serial 1022 (in front of OPS Group HQ)
M48 serial 3599 (at welcome sign to post)
M48A5 AVLB serial A1B072 (in front of 58th ENG motorpool)
M60A3 serial 1778A (coner of 3rd St. and Barstow Rd)
M60A3 serial 1780A (currently in 58th ENG motorpool awaiting torsion bar replacement)
M60A3 serial 1364 (in museum storage yard awaiting resto)
M84 serial ? (mortar carrier, on 3rd St by post HQ)
M551 serial 12B49170 (corner of 5th and B Ave, same as M4 and M26 above)
M278 CEV serial 893 (located between 5th and 7th Streets)
M578 serial BMY1252 (located in museum storage yard)
M113A2 serial 12FC85 (in museum storage yard)
M2 Half Track serial 232411 (used for parades and now made famous by our own Doug Kibbeys drive through the desert)
M109 serial 50021 (in front of OPs Group HQ)
M113A2 serial MSJ12913 (in front of OPs Group HQ)
Others:
M551 serial 12F31769 (heavily mocked up as T-72 at posts welcome sign)
M551 serial 13C516 (1/11th ACR motorpool gate guard, in OPFOR mock-up)
M551 serial 12F25269 ( same as previous Sheridan)

That should do the "armor" portion, minus the soviet stuff. But there were at least 2 BMP's, and 1 T-72. I also have info on 6 other vehicles / artillery pieces, and 7 display helicopters. Does this help?

Jeff, many thanks. Lots of info for V1.1. Is the Sherman a 75 or 76, HVSS or VVSS?
