German WWII HEAT
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: German WWII HEAT

Am wargaming WWII and trying to figure out when/how/to who the Germs started issuing HEAT rounds for their 150L/12 and 75L/24 tank/SP guns. Anyone ever seen ANYTHING on it?
The latest issue of "After the Battle" indicated they used it in their Mk IVs at Kasserine Pass to KO some Shermans (Feb 43), but they probably issued it earlier... France, Barbarossa?
Can't find any examples of use in the 150....

From memory - I did some research on this a while ago - the first type of 7,5cm Gr. 38 Hl was issued late summer 1940, just missing the French campaign, seeing combat in North Africa early in 1941 only to be withdrawn again, allegedly out of fear that the British would copy it, possibly because it wasn't much of a performer and improved designs were on the way. The next generation, the Hl/A, performed much better and was definately in use early in 1942, possibly in late 1941. Dont know about the heavier calibers, but I'd guess they were introduced at the same time.

Thanks Claus.
I also found some clues looking back through my old AFV-NEWS issues. Dick Harley wrote an article in 1995 listing the firing trials the Germans did against the Churchills they captured at Dieppe (Sept 18, 1942). It included about 30 German gun/ammo combinations. Included were 75mm hollow charge 38, 38 (HL/B), 38 (HL/A), 105mm 39 red (HL/A) and 39 ch.6 red (HL/A) ch.5. Notably absent was any mention of any 150mm hollow charge shells (although they did include sIG 33 and sFH 18 150mm guns firing 5 different HE rounds). It seems as if they fired everything they had in their arsenal at these Churchills. This would lead me to believe the 150mm hollow charge rounds were not available at this point in the war.
