Panzer IV with sloped armour
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Interesting Panzer IV to be found at Armorama :

Panzer IV at Armorama

Interesting what-if.

At the bottom someone posted that a conceptual design of a Pazer IV with sloped armour was developed - called 9./B.W. Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf H.

Chamberlain & Doyle makes no mention of it - expect for Panzer Tracts 20-1- any other ref sources on the Panzer IV with sloped armour?

TIA

Was the panzer 4 turret capable of taking the Tiger 1 gun? Recoil forces would have been a problem too, no?

There were two attempts at developing a Panzer IV with sloped armour:

1. A Krupp project from late 1942/early 1943 (probably the one mentioned) which was basically a Panzer IV with sloped armour.

2. An early 1944 Panzer III/IV Einheitsfahrgestell project, which combined automive parts of the Panzer III into a Panzer IV with improved running gear (6 larger roadwheels on each side).

IIRC neither went beyond the drawing board. The former failed because it became too heavy at 28 tons, the latter was incorporated in production plans for 1944/45 but was dropped in favour of shifting Panzer IV production to the Panzer IV/70 (aka Jagdpanzer IV/70).

Both these designs used the basic Panzer IV turret with the 7,5cm KwK 40.

In 1943 and 1944 there were some research done into mounting the Panthers 7,5cm KwK L/70 gun on the Panzer IV, but that apparently proved impractical as well. The 1943 attempt seems to have involved mounting the L/70 gun in the Panzer IV turret while the other fiddled with mounting the Panther Schmalturm on the Panzer IV. I've never read about any attempt to fit the 8,8cm KwK 36 from the Tiger in the Panzer IV.

The model in question is questionable as a what-if. If anything, I'd think you'd be looking at a Panzer III/IV Einheitsfahrgestell with the improved Panzer IV turret under consideration in the summer of 1944 with the standard KwK 40. Would also make a neat challenge as a model, as you would have to make a new suspension, make considerable changes to the hull and make a new turret Smile
