On the link below you will find three photos of Canada’s new (well almost new) Leopard 2A6Ms. Click on the thumbnails to see the high res photos.

Class 70 - that is a heavy tank.

Nice to see the Combat Shopping Cart theme is well established in Germany. I don't see any Canadian markings, just some little stick-figures, 'climb here' on the front corners.

Look closely at the front shot below the spare track links...the Bundeswehr registration number has been removed and replaced by a low visibility black Maple Leaf and a CFR number.

There will likely be next to no markings applied to the tanks....just like the C2...no call signs or Tac signs....that way the Taliban can't keep track as easily of where the tank Troops are deployed.....they will likely have the barrel rings applied to denote the Troop the same as the C2s. That marking system works perfectly in Afghanistan from talking to the tank crews that were on the first tour.

Hopefully we will see the same low vis black Maple Leaf as on the C1 and C2 on the 2A6M CAN....and maybe some turret "battle artwork" like on the C2s in Afghanistan.

There is also add-on armour attached to the upper glacis plate in between the grousers and the driver's hatch running almost the entire width of the hull...it is painted in only NATO green.

[Hello from Texas,

There seems to be three antennas. So is this a PLT commanders or a Company Commanders tank?

Also will this tank ride into battle with both Nato and desert Camofloge?

Just a guess, but maybe its a antenna for the battlefield management system or something like that.

In the NLD army the companycommanders tank has two antennas. One radio is primary loaded with the company command radionet. The second radio is primary loaded with the battalions command radionet. On the secondary channels can another nets loaded such as artillery, logistics etc etc.

The battalionscommander has as primary nets the battalions command net and the brigade command net.

A israeli company and the MoD tested a BMS at our Leopard 2s and there was an extra radio just for sending and receiving the data for the BMS. Since this was a continue process it blocked the normal radiotraffic on the other radios. That why that specific Israeli system needed a extra radio.

Of course, I don't know if this is also the case by the Canadian A6M, but it is a possible explanation.

Regards,
Lesley

The tanks are not slated to be repainted. They already have the Canadian registration numbers applied....doesn't make sense painting over them and them re-applying the registration numbers.

There is no need to re-paint the tanks. All the other Canadian armour in Afghanistan is NATO green and they very quickly get covered in the dust.

Canada uses the terminology of Squadron instead of Company and Troop instead of Platoon....just as a point of interest.

All of the Leopard C2s in Afghanistan are mounting two antennas....there is a tactical reason beyond the communications aspect.

The third antenna mounted on the 2A6M CAN may be for an additional commmand radio net or it may serve another use I won't get into here.

Hi Folks!

Thanks for the update! That close up of the driver looks like he is very happy with his new AFV.

Anyone notice the aircraft that was carring that Leo? Shocked
Man, how times have changed.

Looks to me to be a pretty capable "recycled" tank! Won't these beasties will be painted in desert colors now that they've arrived in Afghanistan?

Ironic that the Canadian Forces' latest MBT is being deployed to fight a guerrilla war. Do any other NATO contingents in Afghanistan have tanks?

The tanks won't be re-painted. No need to re-paint them...all the other Canadian armour in Afghanistan is NATO green except for some of the RG-31 Nyalas. There will very likely be a tan Barracuda camouflage covering attached to the hull and turret over the next couple of weeks as the other tanks arrive in AFG.

There are no other NATO main battle tanks in Afghanistan. The Norwegians have their Ingeniørpanservogn ACEV in Afghanistan...it is based on the Leopard 1 hull. The Danish have a Platoon of Leopard 2A5DK ready to deploy but they aren't being committed to being sent over.

Guerrilla war?....same thing the Abrams and Challenger 2 are doing in Iraq.

This transporter is Dutch, borrowed by the Movements Control staff to get the Leo off the apron to its designated destination. At first I thought the truck was one of a new family of transport tractors and trailers announced by DND. They were European, possibly Mercedes.

Yes, Mercedes, based on the "Actros"-series, seems like I forgot the funky Canadian acronym...

Was, Mijnheer Delsing, was a Dutch company- the car division was sold to Volvo in 1975 and Paccar bought the truck division in 1996, so technically they're now an US company with a Dutch truck division... Another icon gone.
