German M60A3?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

They are called grousers on the glacis plate.

Actually, us German-speaking nations (which includes Austria) call them "Eisgreifer", which translates into ice cleats- grouser is probably the term applied by the Canadian Armed Forces, but is not completely correct, since grousers traditionally attach to the sides and widen the track, which ice cleats don't do.

Jens,
On the M-1 Series T158 track we have "Ice Cleats" listed as an Additional Authorized Item. Unlike the German track they are bolted in like the track pads.

I read once in an M60 manual that you could turn every 5th center guide upside down to operate in ice.

Mark,

Yes, but you have to cut the tips off by 1" or 1-1/4", Can't recall the exact amount. Done to avoid damaging the fenders and air cleaner boxes. Same procedure was authorized on M-1's with T156 track. The BDAR manual explains it in detail.

BTW, This M60A3"O" was one of the original M60A1's of the Austrian Army rebuilt by Steyr to A3 standards.

Ice Cleats, Eisgreifer, or Grousers....what ever, now you guys know what they are...not ERA related equipment.

The Australians called them grousers too on the Leopard AS1.

They were great when fitted in all kinds of adverse weather....not just on ice.

Some news from the Austrian M60 A3 OE(sterreich) (instead of dots over a,u,o you could write ae, oe, ue also, therefor "OE" on Austrian airplanes)
The tank is not any longer in the Museum, it is back in casern. I got the information from modelling collegues, that there are 3 M60A3 OE and got name from one mechanic there. I try to get a serial number.
Regards from Vienna

Y'all can download cheat sheets of ASCII character codes most everywhere (just Google). I keep one by my desk as home and work (handy for Greek letter, trademark, copyrights, umlauts, other special characters, etc). You can enter MOST "special characters" like "umlauts" (I like to call 'em "snakebites" when I'm feeling whimsical) by the simple expedient of knowing the code, which is usually Alt+0+the digit code...as for all ASCII characters (usually 1-3 numbers)

Not all characters will be reproduced by all websites ...let's try the example above and see if it works on this one...

M60A3 Ö

Yup!

Robert,

Thanks for the information. I wonder if the one that was on display was either one of these?
