ON THE WAY! Stryker 120mm Mortar.
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Cooool. I got to see an MGS and mortar version this past week w/ much of their guts showing. A couple of MGS's had their turrets off and resting on turret racks, and the mortar and it's mount were outside of that respective vehicle as well.

The anti-sniping camo net mount makes for another intersting look to the Stryker these days.

2nd Cav now deploying in Iraq has the Block 1 RWS, which is nice finally to see employed. Finally we are starting to see all the variants the way they were meant to be used (B variant of the mortar, stabilized RWS, MGS - RWS will be "pimped" out with more interesting weapons in the near future too).

Thanks for the photograph Roy.

Several years ago BAE Systems demonstrated a 120mm armoured mortar system (AMS) on a LAV and were proposing its use on ASLAVs or stretched M113 chassis (now coming into service as M113AS4).

An AMS would reduce the small arms and counter battery threat but would have a weight penalty. What other considerations are there for and against a turreted mortar system?

Bear in mind that the Australian Army currently does not have a self-propelled indirect fire support capacity.

Regards

David
