The "Other" Ontario Panther?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: The "Other" Ontario Panther?

Hi Folks:

I was reading a thread ( www.mapleleafup.org/fo...eadid=9628 ) about the restoration of the Canadian War Museum's Panther (the ex-Borden Ausf. A), and there was an intriguing comment about possibly using some parts from "the other Ontario Panther" to help with the work. Well, this is news to me. Aside from a few Panther track links at the Swords and Ploughshares museum outside Ottawa, I wasn't aware of another Panther here, and I just checked the Surviving Panzers list to see if it was there (no mention). Does anybody have any more information on this vehicle?

Cheers and thanks,

Scott

Scott,

I seem to remeber an old article in the much missed Wheels & Tracks, it mentioned the discovery of a complete set of panther tracks on RCEME recovery range near Borden.

Reading this thread, I'm thinking that "the other Ontario Panther" could be a tank that was brought back from Germany in 1945 or so, served as a target on a fire range after the war and was maybe scrapped after that.

That's why we don't find any evidence of the existence of this tank nowadays, but that could explain why some tracks were recovered on RCEME recovery range near Borden.

Hi Folks:

I'm not sure that it's just a set of tracks we're talking about here (although the Borden tracks might be the ones that are at the Swords and Ploughshares museum - they look like they came off a range wreck). Note in the thread that I referenced that it referred to getting road wheels (or at least hubs) from "the other Ontario Panther." It sounds at least like there's the remnants of a hull out there somewhere.

Still hopeful for an undiscovered Panther out here in my neck of the woods, I guess. Smile

Cheers,

Scott

The CMP forum (or Maple Leaf Up) went through this head scratching exercise a few years ago. Everyone jumped in with their sightings including WWII tanks in the Petawawa River seen by divers and various private scrapyards. If you go to ( www.mapleleafup.org/forums/ ) and go back in the archives, you may find your answer. As I recall, all the tanks in Canada have been accounted for.

Speaking of the Swords and Plowshares Museum, they traded their Ram to the CWM for some other vehicles. But the national museum can't store it, ironically because they closed Vimy House, so it remains at S&P.
