USMC LAV's
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: USMC LAV's

Hello Fellow CIA members and other Folks!

Was checking for AFV type news and found an article over at Defence Talk dot Com about new LAV's for the USMC.

On October 12, 2007, the Marines received the first LAV-A2 of an order for 157 vehicles in six variants. LAV-25, anti-tank, command and control, logistics, mortar and NBCRS.

Ah! That would explain why I saw what appeared to be an early LAV near the airport this week. I've been used to seeing LAV IIIs/Strykers, but this stood out. I hadn't seen any for a while other than the Saudi ones with the 90mm turret. Are these new-builds or rebuilds? The article implies new vehicles, but I wasn't sure if they still had the tooling for straight LAVs still at GDLS.

Thanks for the info.

Cheers,

Scott

It is my understanding that they are "NEW" LAV-II's. The Marines would rather have LAV-Is, which would have standardized their fleet, but that version is no longer available from GDLS.

Some of the vehicles are replacements but most will be for adding another platoon to each Light Recon Company.

The LAV-II along with the LAV-III and LAV-IV's are currently available.

The LAVs are being upgraded to LAV-A2 standard by the Maintenance Center in Albany.

That article sounds like a program that is upgrading the OLD LAV-Is to the newer LAV-II/ LAV-A2 standard.

The vehicles I have been talking about are NEW vehicles from GDLS under a contract that when out during FY2006.

Good to hear that the Marines are spending some money on the older vehicles. That will help standardize the fleet and the parts system needed to keep all of them running.
