'19' MOS Series
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Here's something from a 1977 Army document:

"Among recommendations submitted by the Tank Forces Management Group, twenty-eight concerned personnel actions. One of the most important was the establishment of a separate armor management field. Some of the broad military occupational specialties such as 11D, Armor Reconnaissance Specialist, and 11E, Armor Crewman, will be broken down into more descriptive categories and assigned new numbers in the 19-series. For example, 11E will be split into five new MOS's-19G Armor Reconnaissance Vehicle Crewman; 19H, Armor Reconnaissance Vehicle Driver; 19E M48-M60A1/A3 Armor Crewman, 19F Tank Driver, 19J M60A2 Armor Crewman; and MOS 11D will be converted to MOS 19D Cavalry Scout. This new career management field will become effective 1 March 1978."

Hi Folks!

I remember the times just before that. An 11E tanker would be given a MOS test (pre-SQT) and it would have guestions about the:
M48A5 - A vehicle only National Guard and tankers assigned to Korea for a time would see,
M551 - A vehicle only a hand full of tankers would work on if assigned to a Div Cav, an ACR or jump qualified tankers assigned to the 4/68-3/73 Armor.
M60A2 - A vehicle a few servied on only by luck or lack of,
Then there was the rest of the M60 family where most 11Es were assigned.

Then there was the thing that Fort Benning Ga was trying to develope the 11 MOS series (11B infantryman, 11C infantry indirect fire crewman, 11D Scout, 11E tanker, 11H Anti-tank missile crewman) of early SQT books and tests. 11Ds and 11Es were trained at Ft. Knox and the folks down at Benning didn't have a clear idea of what and how their training was done.

Some very old history,
Sgt, Scouts Out!

...and I found out the hard way when I got to Vietnam that 11E's had a secondary of 11D when I was assigned to a unit with no armored vehicles whatsoever. I didn't even know what an 11D was until they told me I was one. Rolling Eyes

Hint: Take "Armor Reconnaissance Specialist" and delete the "Armor" part.
