MRAP's in the News
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Additional MRAP armor

How will adding 5K of armor to an MRAP degrade its performance? Won't it increase the potential of the vehicle's tipping over?

Yes it will. And it won't go as fast, can't carry as much cargo and get worse mileage.

Also increases wear and decreases reliability but not sure at all how much. Probably varies quite a bit between vehicle types and uses.

The MRAP is a heavy short wheelbase truck that is carrying a heavy armoured shell already. It would seem shortsighted for the designers not to have left some capacity for upgrades in their specifications.

The nature of the IED war seems to be evolving quickly. When the good guys find a way to defeat the insurgents' weapons of choice, six months later a new variant or type will appear. The Explosive Formed Penetrator is a more sophisticated device than a car loaded to the spring stops with leftover artillery warheads and a few sticks of C4. We can only hope the bad guys have fewer EFP charges than old 155 projectiles.

As soon as we figure out how to defeat the latest EFP, the Iranians will come up with a revised version....then we will....then they will....then we will....see a pattern here?

Iran and Syria need to be taken out of the picture...then the EFP's will dry up. But that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

The EFP plates are made quite easily in a machine shop. A recent british raid bagged nearly 100 of them - all locally produced. Nice picture in Soldier magazine IIRC.

It's the triggering and concealment that changes all the time. Countermeasures are only good until they learn what we are using (usually by very poor OPSEC on our behalf).

BTW, Guess who taught this part of the world how to make them in the early 80's to use against the Russians ???
