News Pics of AFVs in the South Ossetia conflict (updated)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

DAMN.....

Layers of reactive armor,.... but still massive destruction. I assume this is caused by Air Strikes, otherwise there is some seriously close engagements.

Pardon my ignorance, but did this just pop up, or has it been brewing?

10 georgian tanks has been destroyed yesterday in Zhinvali combats.
4 tanks start to fire agains civiliant buildings, 3 destroyed, one captured. Brave georgian tankers from this tank try to run, but bullets is faster...

In fact, interesting to see propaganda on the CNN, Euronews etc. They transfer only georgean view of situation, and it's a lie. War started in 0:30 an Moscow time in 8 august, georgian bastards use MLRS, heavy artillery and ground attack aviation against civiliants. 1400 killed in Zhinvali in first day, in fact, it's genocide. They use heavy artillery against pearekeepers, they shoot to wounded peoples. Only activity of russian army stop real genocide.

Sorry, only on russian:

First - attack of Zhinvali night attack by georginan heavy artillery and MRLS, they start war, in fact.

what's incredible IMO is that each other is fighting with the same equipment and vehicles than the ennemy (Georgian have mostly Russian vehicles). How do they recognize their friends from the enemy? There may be a lot of friendly fire..

For Neil, trying to be as apolitical as possible, there were tensions between the Georgia and the autonomous South Ossetia (S-O) which is part of the Georgia for a while : South Ossetia is autonomous since the Georgia declared to be independant of the former USSR and there is a part of the S-O population which is willing to be on the Russian side rather than on the Georgian one (there is a North Ossetia in Russia). The Russian troops are supporting the S-O guys agains the Georgian, so there are a lot of tensions between Russia and Georgia and inside Georgia, in S-O. So one could tell that this has been brewing.
Maybe someone could explain this better than me..

P-O

A problem with the whole T-72/T-80 family is that the autoloader design used separate loading ammunition and put the ammo around the bottom of the turret basket. Thus any event that leads to a fire almost always leads to an ammo propellant cook-off and/or HE detonation which pops the turret out of the race. Unfortunately, the tank is also surprisingly suceptible to events that lead to fires.

The viewpoint of media reports I've seen have been drifting in the last 24 hours . . . It's apparent now, at least in my view, that the Georgians did in fact use the cover of the Olympics to launch their drive to re-control S-O, and the Russians moved in response.

However, S-O is still technically part of Georgia, so the presence of Russian troops in Georgian territory was a ticking time bomb. How they got there and why is a discussion for another forum, fortunately.

Does S-O have a significant muslim population? That's all the world really needs right now: another "Holy War" . . . Sad

Following Op Desert Storm, there was a term that I heard, when referring to engaging Iraqi T72's: "POP Goes the Daisey".

Ammunition within the crew compartment, and especially beneath the turret basket, Is pure suicidal.

I also have a healthy distrust of 'Autoloaders'. Especially at the cost of THE most valuable asset on the battle field, A Fourth Crewman (The indestructable loader).

Ammo not in "Fixed" steel or brass casings tends to burn much easier too.

Interesting that turret popping is very common with the T72 series. But I think that also has to do with physics. Western tank turrets are much heavier and larger. Either way, when the ammo goes, the tank is toast. Turret popping is just more visually dramatic. When was the last time you've seen a 48/60 series or Centurion pop a turret after a fire? M48/M60's generally pop the cupola.

I too am a firm believer in the "Human" loader, although some I've had barely qualified for that title Smile .

I was up at APG the other day "playing" in their Foreign Exploitation yard and I am amazed that people even fit in tanks with auto-loaders, those tanks have such a low-profile (cramped area) to begin with. I'm 6'4 and there is no way I would survive in a Russian designed MBT.

Well, typical tank crew - 5'5-5'7 Wink

About georgian tanks. It's late series T-72, upgraded by Ukraina, also they have upgraded T-62M.

Tanks with ammunition in turret more vulnerable, in fact. Working of anti-blast doors is terra incognita Wink
