The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I say it was a Chieftain, searchlight on the left side of the turret,
fume extractor a third from the muzzle of the gun plus all those little
hatches and stowage racks, typically British in looks

I agree with Guy — I think it is a Chieftain turret.

However, I believe that it is a Centurion hull. The angled hull side plates, the mufflers/exhausts on the rear fenders, fender-mounted stowage boxes alongside the turret.

I don't know what the Brits had for prototypes/bash-ups between the Centurion and the Chieftain . . . perhaps the "40-ton Centurion"? I think I've only seen picts of the front/side of that, and here you can't count roadwheels (five on "40-ton Centurion", I think) or see the turret front (a Chieftain-style [non]mantlet and sloped turret front).

Or maybe this is just a Chieftain turret tossed onto a Centurion hull . . . it doesn't look very centered, and the right side near the turret ring looks to not be connected to anything.

??

(But definitely British junk.)

I agree its most likely a Chieftain turret thrown on a Centurion hull, or possibly mounted in some ad hoc fashion. I dont think and am hopeful its not the 40-ton Centurion.

Firstly, the 40-ton Centurion is supposedly in storage at the Tank Museum - although I've never seen a modern picture of it.

Secondly, it would be a lot "cleaner" as a prototype instead of a fielded vehicle.

Thirdly, it looks to me the hatch is different. I take it the Chieftain has a one-piece commander's(?) hatch? The picture I have of the 40-ton Centurion in Griffin's Chieftain book has a two-piece hatch.

Have seen this and pretty similar combination on flickr.com, different angle shot shows strange (for me) rounded aperture in left front part of hull roof armour and turret aperture plated over...
See the links: www.flickr.com/photos/...4/sizes/o/
and
www.flickr.com/photos/...2/sizes/o/

Could those hulls be a remnant of some ARV variant/s of Centurion?
Ah, yes, these photos were taken at the ranges of Lulworth Gunnery School, UK.

I think I know what that hull is,

It is obviously Centurion, but what was puzzling were the two pictures Palic posted.

There are some unusual cupolas on those hulls that look very much like the ones on the Centurion ARK Variant. In my opinion these were retired ARK's with redundant Chieftain turrets left over from them being converted to ARV's or AVLB's. Somebody probably figured they'd make great tank targets on a range by cobbling them together.

Open for other theories,

Joe D

They are ARK hulls.
