M551 Sheridan night firing
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The reg number in Doug's pic is 09A83069.

Doug was not clear about the last two digits - which I can be sure of - so assuming he got the first 5 right, the above is correct.

Reg numbers that begin "0" vehicle class number (9 in this case) alpha character followed by 5 numeric characters end with the last two digits being the year built, or having undergone a MAJOR rebuild. Therefore, it couldn't have been 09 - leaving only the 69 from his earlier interpretation.

What is bizarre here is that the vehicle registration number has a 09 prefix (tank) rather than 12 (AARV).

Going to the tribute to Vets and military vehicle gathering at Bumpus H-D in Jackson tomorrow?

Regards,
David Doyle

Thanks David,

Those registration numbers for M60's are very aggravating, First were the 9B series, then some 09A were thrown in, then they eventually went to the JJ (M60A1) and JK (M60A2) designators. That's why I track by serial number.

M60A2's are tanks IAW the new classification they went to. Army was going from Light, Medium, and Heavy tank to AR/AAV and MBT. The M551 was one half of the new system, the M60 the other. The master plan at the time was to go missile over KE munitions. The M60A2 project was supposed to be the interim solution until the MBT70 went online. I was curious about that RN because I'm trying to get a handle on how many M60A1E1's and M60A1E2's were made. Gotten to the point of looking at pictures and adding up the different RN's painted on the side.

Didn't know of the tribute, but couldn't go if I did. Hopefully the weather clears up.

Joe,
I may have some info that will help you on the reg number thing - I'll take a look come Monday and post here.

Best wishes,
David

David,
Nope, turns out that's not it...it's 09A 939 69. Found the original pic. Keep in mind this is an Armor Board Test Project vehicle, so might deviate from the normal progression. There were several aspects to test vehicles that might no comform to the usual system.

Well, its still a 1969 vehicle - just 109 vehicles later than I thought! (one of these days, I gotta get some new glasses!

Nah, it's just the quality of the scans. This one is jpg conversion of a 600 dpi, 70MB tiff file, which the earlier ones definitely were not. Laughing

Just out of curiosity, did the Sheridan ever engage another tank in action with either its gun or missile and if so was it thought successful?

Yes, and yes - I recall one instance of the Shillelagh being used in Desert Storm. There are reports (which I've not confirmed) of one or possibly to other missile uses during DS as well.

David
