Hey all

In an attempt to clear up the constant confusion of what is on Static display vehicles are on Ft Knox, I am currently working on an exact listing of what is in Richardson Motor Pool.

The image on Google maps is several years old, but demonstrates the close proximity of vehicles stored around 'the yard'.

Google Maps: Richardson Motor Pool

My initial focus is on the 'upper storage area', which is the gravel storage area in the northern corner of the MP and is where most of the vehicles are packed together, and covered with tarps.

I am working up an index 'map' to show what is where, and record all SN/RN data. Hopefully by this time tomorrow, I will have a 90% solution to this area.

I'll also be recording all the vehicles stored in each individual building as well as along the fense line.

There is semi-constant vehicle movement or shifting around the MP, so this will be a 'work in progress' but hopefully I can get a handle on it, so to limit the amount of confusion.

Regards
Don

I found this imagery link that may help your project. It is specific to Cape Cod, Mass, but the link is moveable. Rather than rely on Google Maps alone, and all their associated inconsistencies, try using any of these sources. Who knew there were dozens of on line imagery sites?

stable.toolserver.org/...e:landmark

If you are going to go to the trouble of finding the vehicles, make note of the coordinates (lat/lon or MGRS). This way the next guy can use other remote viewers or geocache techniques to double check.

After enduring the cold rain and wet paper, I have recorded every vehicle that is in the 'Upper Storage Area'.

There are 65 vehicles packed in that area, alone.

I have tried to extract as much info as possible and I am compiling all collected data and 'building' a diagram of the area.

I will try to have the results posted later this evening.

Additionally I should have some most interesting photos to post from todays volunteer work day.

Stay tuned

You are staying busy. Thanks for your hard work. By any chance can you gunny proof that area?
My mind went else where when you said you had the deal with "wet paper"... not thinking writing and notebook... (extra socks or shirt sleeves...)

Shawn

Well the shoes & socks are soaked, and my feet are still warming / drying. Guess I should have worn boots but sorta forgot.

Below is a composite photo series of the upper storage area. Photo #1 begins on the northern most fence-line and pans right to photo #4 which is Main Range road and the fence-line.

It pretty much covers all 65 vehicles stored there.

24 M60A1 MBT 4284

So there is a 4284 and She is an M60A1.

Keeping that in mind, she should be the missing RN 09B8957 based on the SN. If I were a betting man I'd say she also would be a GEN 2 hull with a large escape hatch. This one has eluded me for a long time. Way to go Don.

I added the above diagram and amended the vehicle info. The diagram is a bit crude but it'll have to work for now.

Don,
Many thanks! It will definitely be interesting to see what is "left over" on my list after you have positively IDed everything at RMP...

A few questions & observations:

1) What kind of LVT is #9?
2) I had three M5 Stuarts listed in storage - SNs 3603, 3903, & 8182. I assume one is now on display at 3rd Ave & 1st Cavalry Regiment Rd. Another one of these three may be the one at 4th Cavalry Brigade (Building 6581), Eisenhower Ave. Any idea which one is which, including #30 in storage above?
3) FYI M26 Pershing #8 should be SN 1394; ex-Eglin AFB.
4) M36B2 #36 is ex-Yugoslav right? Has a T-55 engine, etc...
5) Is M47 Patton #59 the cutaway one?
6) Any idea if M48 Patton #37 was the one at Harmon Hall, or 16th Cav?
7) I was a little surprised at the previously unidentified M84s and M981s...
8) Any idea if M114 #53 is the one that was at the Ropkey museum?

Dont expect you to have answers to all of these - but any answers you do have would be welcome!

Thanks as always Don!

Neil

Remember this is only the 'upper' area. I still have to cover the 'lower storage area', 2 fense lines, and of course the several buildings, so there will be some gaps till I can do a precise vehicle location listing. BUT your questions are fairly easily answered.

1) LVT (#9)

2) This may be a previously unlisted M5. It arrived back in 2004 or 2005. Its always been in RMP.

3) Yes, M26 (#8) is 1394. (I'll update above list)

4) Yes, #36 was recovered in Bosnia in 1999. I was there when it was recovered from the 'Serb' Weapon Storage Site.

5) A slight mistake, #59 is an M41 from Crawfordsville, not M47. Thanks for the correction.

6) Not sure where M48(# 37) was previously displayed.

7) All the M84's are old static displays from around post. The M981's are fairly new (2004?) and run. One was on display in the museum for ahwile.

Cool Yes M114 (#53) came from Crawsfordsville.

Hope that helps straighten things a little.

Don,

One possible way to ID the difference between the old 16th CAV's HQ's (Ironsides and 3rd AVE) and the Harmon Hall (Burger King) is by the track tension wheel. The one at Harmon Hall has them and IIRC the the CAV's tank were removed.

On the M48's, I don't have a recollection of the '16th Cav M48'? I only remember 2 M60's and the MAITs M1IP. I have tracked these down already (pardon the pun)

I have an old photo of the 'Burger King' M48 and do remember the tensioner wheel. Not sure if #37 has that.

The only other M48 I remember, was at Wilson Rd Gate. I was on the 'paint detail' several years ago and that was one we did. It was removed to RMP. I can make a positive ID on that vehicle, since the muzzle brake is loose and tends to fall off so next visit to RMP, I can go around and 'jiggle' M48 muzzle brakes and check for tensioner wheels.

Geez, what one has to do for 'you people'.... Wink
