According to my notes it was destroyed in 1942. Not to defend it, but at least it was during WWII and there's only one survivor today - so APG wasnt the only one to make this mistake...

Given it was 1942, I imagine that the thinking was more along the lines of: "We'll give it back to the Nazis alright, in pieces, out of the barrels of our guns and bombays of our planes!!"

Things were pretty desperate back then, actually worse than what most people - even today - realized.

I was thinking of the 50's thru 70's when such actions & decisions were made. Without the influence of such desperate times.
