Fort Lewis #8: Range Control M47 Patton, M60A0, M113
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

M47 Patton - very low SN, 29! However, I didnt see any other "early model" M47 with a T42 (oscillating) turret as was previously identified at Lewis...

There did appear to be an Italian rebuild plate on the rear, but it was painted over & ineligible...

Neil,

Do you have a good close up of the left side of the turret ???

From the picture you posted, it appears this one had a "Pistol Port" that's been welded over.

Might be shadows or something. I'm asking since if it does, that could possibly be one of the T42 turrets.

Which apparently should have been labeled as a T69 (it was a new turret on a T42 chassis) according to Hunnicutt, Patton, p47-48.

That sure looks like a former T42 turret with the port welded over.

I wonder if the ordnance corps decided to use those turrets to help with production when the T42 program was canceled/changed to the T69 with oscillating turret. Kinda weird that you were looking for an M47 with that kinda turret and found a T42 turret instead.

No, I actually was looking for an M47 with a T42 turret - just I thought the T42 was an oscillating turret, when that's really the T69... So I completely missed the fact that it had a pistol port when other M47s dont... So I learned something new today - thanks!

Thank you for posting,

I wasn't aware they used the T42 turrets on production tanks until now. Makes you wonder if this is the only one left, since many M47's ended up as hard targets. Might be the only one left, IIRC six turrets were made and one was Non Ballistic "Soft Steel".

This tank used to be back on base somewhere (2000). On top of the turret is cast:

7537163
SER 73
[GSC logo]

which is same P/N as a regular turret. This was just an early design.

(The one at APG, ex MoT, is:

7537163
SER - 740
PSF 8-8-52
REV - 11 - 7 -5 - 6 -1)

The lower hull also had some odd cast-in pads as if for shock mounts

Best I can tell from Hunnicutt only the first two T42 turrets had pistol ports. It was deleted from the third T42 turret, and as far as I can tell, all following M47 production vehicles.

One of the two early T42 turrets was installed on an M46 chassis - which was designated the M46E1.
