The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. Cant seem to find the Centurion & Sherman (which appear to be located near eachother based on the pics) - looks like there's been lots of construction...

Nice list, Neil, but a bit out of date I think. I tried to visit the Russell Churchill for example, and it had gone (been sold abroad I was told) - we discussed it in another thread (probably the PreservedTanks.com one), along with pictures of it at TankFest.

I don't know anything about a Winchester Chieftain, but we did discuss the Centurion there:

Remains of a Churchill Mk II Tank
Near Springhead Hill which can be seen on the horizon. The tank belonged to 14th Canadian Tank Regiment and suffered serious mechanical failure during exercises in 1942 and was subsequently stripped of anything that could be used again leaving the hulk behind for target practice as can be seen by the bullet holes. At the end of the war the remains were buried in a former bomb crater and stayed there until rediscovered in 1993 whereupon it was placed next to a junction of bridleways near to Springhead Hill car park whose access up the scarp face owes its existence to the wartime need for training for tanks.

quote :
Went down Thorncliffe Road today past the industrial estate and was horrified to see the old churchill tank has been removed...

Where's it gone?
Is it coming back?

I hope so as yet it's another part of Sheffields' history gone.

I do think that there is more than Churchill tanks :

Churchill, Ferret & Saladin - I'm due to go photograph them sometime as soon as the latest security panic is over (someone threw a bomb over the fence) Like most barracks in NI you cannot see into them due to the screen fencing that surrounds them.

I heard that one was sold too, but I don't know anything more about it. I think there was some argument over who it belonged to and whether they had the right to sell it.
