Achilles? Hood - Carson????
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Well guys, I have a flock of question. Does anyone know if the M10 Achilles listed on the register is the real deal - and if real, where is it at now? What kind of condition is it in?

Thanks,
David Doyle

David,

Here is a picture I took in FEB 2006 at Fort Hood. Hopefully she is still there and has not been taken to Fort Carson. I'm no expert but I'm sure she's the real deal.

Maybe a reverse land-lease?

Jeff Button has had a lot going on lately but I'll see if he knows how it got there. Its only 1 of 2 in the US - and the other one is at MVTF, assume it was imported...

If photo that Joe posted above is at the 1st Cav Museum, it should still be at Ft Hood.

Having spent many years back & forth to Ft Hood (in 1st Cav) I had vaguely remembered the M10 but I couldn't remember for sure.

Regards
Don

The rumor I heard was she was part of the old Tank Destroyer school at Hood.

Wonder if they were sent it by the British for evaluation ?

IIRC it was at the 1st CD museum at the time.

It's at the old 4th ID Museum, now the 3rd ACR Museum - in fact you can see a 4th ID symbol in a water tower in the background in the pic above.

Here it is beside a standard M10 GMC.

Then it always was there and I got confused. I Recognize the layout with the other tanks now.

Happens with age I guess Confused

Both M10s were still there in late Nov 2009.

Anybody have a contact name/number at whatever museum "owns" the Achilles?

Thanks,
David

Here you go.

www.hood.army.mil/3d_a...useum.aspx

Keep in mind the director has only just recently arrived at Hood from Carson, so he may not have all the details...
