Russian Tank-Salem Missouri
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This was captured in Gulf War I in Euphrates River Valley. It is in front of American Legion Post #99, Salem Missouri.

Is this based on the T-55?

That is a good catch. Might be the only one of its type available for public view in the USA.

Lesley, let me get in touch with the guy who took the picture. He is one of my friends from a tractor forum. I had asked the guys on there to please help me by taking pics of any armor in their home towns. Will let you know soon.

What features tell you it's a Type 69? I've always keyed in on the headlights on the fenders as a recognition point, but this one has the T55 style lights.

I'm really curious about the specific visible differences between the T55 and the T-69. I have an ongoing project to convert a Tamiya T55 to an Iraqi tank similar to this one, and I seem to have a choice between the T55 and the T-69 in the photos I'm using as references.

It's a Czech built T55 that has had Chi-Com Boom Shiield armor added to the turret. ID points are the egg shaped gunner's sight and coax openings in the front of the turret and the deep fording covers on the engine deck.

That's not really a good ID feature as some Type 59s the Iraqis used had these. The main ID point for a Type 69 would be the rear wall of the lower hull. Type 69s have a fan housing like a T62. Also the gunners sight on top of the turret is square shaped and covered with tread plate.

Is that from him, or Google? I got conflicting results that said Highway 72 E, Highway 72 W, and Highway 32 W...

That is the spot. Google Earth shows the same building, but with no tank and an older looking sign by the road. This must be it Neil.

She's on my other than M60 list of tanks to photograph,

Probably will get to her next time I go to Fort Leonard Wood. Any special angle or area requests let me know.
