Trip to Fort Benning
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Made a quick trip to Fort Benning.

On the way Took these:

M60A3 SN 3888A, RN 09A16372 Sylacauga AL

Located at 33.166765, -86.265100. This tank confirmed to me that serial numbers were double issued between Mainz and Anniston, only the depot ID letter being different. 3888M is located in Hattiesburg MS. Also confirms my theory that a lot more than 5400 A3's were produced. The Guard unit there is Delta Company, 167th Infantry. There is also a co-located American Legion Post #45 there.

These were located in Alexander City Alabama at the Charles E. Bailey Sr. Sportsplex.

M60 SN 195

M47 SN 7002

M42

Located at 32.926465, -85.976980.

I had about an Hour to find and photograph the vehicles on Fort Benning. Didn't have any of my gear since I wasn't in my car. This is what I found.

At the old Infantry Museum, which is now closed:

2S1
Bradley
M1 SN 0103
M41
M47
M48
M59
M60 SN 1233
M60A1 SN 8793, RN JJ01UY
T72
XM701
XM723

Found these around 2-69 Armor Battalion,
M41 2-69 AR BN HQ's Bldg 9171
M41 Bldg 9184
Sherman 2-69 Motor Pool enterance Bldg 9097

Last, these were in the Sand Hill area on Pomeroy Parade Field,
M3
M75
M106

I also seen an M59 in a Motor Pool near 2-69's area and an M114 in the Sand Hill area. Sorry no pictures. There was a Sherman at the new Museum's WWII barracks area but I only saw her from a distance. My next trip (not to distant future) I will have more time to look around for other stuff.

Joe

The Armor Museums vehicles moved so far are supposed to be in the Sand Hill Area. Not sure where, but they should all be 'parked & tarped' together.

Nice photos from 'enemy territory'.

bialy,

I can't say for certain, The M75 at Pomeroy Field was just recently placed there with the M3 Stuart and M106. I don't think they are the same. Looking at your image she doesn't have the exhaust pipe in the front and the Registration number looks much different from the one I took pictures of (M75 Registration # ) My friend said a lot of stuff is moving around. There are many vacant pads at the old museum and the old shuttle train that was used to move troops from one range to the other was gone to include the track. He said for a while on Sand Hill there was an old "Renault" French tank up there but it's now gone. He wasn't sure exactly what it was. If there is a wish list of what to find let me know, I will be back in the near future, this trip was a short notice deal.

What you are calling a M106 is in fact a M125.

Jim

As part of the BRAC move, the Patton Museum of Cavalry & Armor, will become two seperate museums.

Ft Knox will be the home of the Patton Museum with the focus to be drastically changed.

Ft Benning will be the home of the National Infantry Museum (NIM) and the future (yet to be officially named) National Armor & Cavalry Museum.

The majority of the current Patton Museums Armor vehicle collection (as well as Armor & Cavalry related artifacts) will be moved to Ft Benning and become the National Armor & Cavalry Museum.

So far there has been approx 20 vehicles that have been moved to Ft Benning and are currently in the 'Sand Hill' area. Most of those vehicles were previously stored at Richardson Motor Pool.

Hope that helps

Ord School (Museum) collection goes with the school to....

Ft. Lee, VA

The museum hasn't quite made it to the "artists' rendering" stage, according to their site:

I'm not sure if the Ordnance Museum building funding has been approved by Congress yet! SO all the vehicles that are being staged down there are in outside storage (including the ones that were inside at Aberdeen)

But there is the following, although the date has slipped by 1 year.

There is $30M for the new Ordnance Museum in the FY11 budget request, which is making its way through Congress.
