December 26-30 anybody in Saumur?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I am going to visit Saumur's Museum for four days in a row. No need to say I plan to take thousands of pictures. I would love to meet any of you over there.

I still hope to do a similar visit to Bovington in March, but I am not able to finalize it yet.

Massimo, please remember to get permission for photos BEFORE you go.
and remember if you get to Bovington there is no way they will allow you to use a tripod "health and safety"

In Saumur you pay an extra ticket for the pictures. Had no problem last time I was there for a quick visit (6 months ago).

I am aware of the tripod issue in Bovington, it's mentioned on their website too. I am not a tripod guy anyway, so I am not going to be that much affected. But I appreciate the reminder.

Massimo,

I would probably be able to go to Saumur on December 26 (on Sunday). Not sure to be able to stay for Monday or Tuesday.

How do you plan to do your trip, will you arrive only on December 26 evening, or will you already be there on Sunday 26 morning?

Pierre-Olivier

I rang ahead to Bovington and got permission to use a tripod when I visited. However, on the day there were so many pictures to take in so little time that I never used it (and carrying it turned out to be a liability).

On December 26 I will land in Paris at 13:35. I still have to book the train, from Paris to Saumur, but I will arrive in the evening for sure.

well, I had the same problem in Saumur. Had a tripod but not enough time to use it. A real pain to carry it all day long.

So, I have to ask for holidays on December 27. Should NOT be a problem.

I've thought of buying one of those photographer waistcoats or backpacks that can hold a tripod on your back, but have never got around to it. If anyone has experience of using one, I'd be interested to hear about it.

I have one of those backpacks, actually two, of difference sizes. But they are already pretty heavy, with all the stuff I put inside. A tripod would make things worst Smile

Firstly, have you thought of using a monopod? The professional snappers at sports events seem to use them (so I guess they are convenient) .

Secondly, remember that Bovington is due to close on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. It is not specified if that means just the actual days (24th/25th/26th/1st) OR includes the Bank Holidays, which means 24th/25th/26th/27th/28th/3rd.

Nowdays I don't feel a need for either a tripod or monopod. In recent years I improved my gear with fast lens and a camera body that can handle high ISO pretty well. So I can shot handheld even in poor light.

I always shot tons of pictures and monopod or tripod would drammatically reduce the amount of pictures I can take, because they requires much more time for each shot. Sport shooters use monopods because they have heavy tele-photo lenses too. That's not the case inside museums.

I am aware of Bovington closing in those days. But I am going to Saumur Smile

Hope to visit Boving later on, english weather was another factor I consider.

Thanks for the reminder anyway.
