Bovington, FV 4004 Conway or FV 4005?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Bovington, FV 4004 Conway or FV 4005?

During my visit last year, I saw this tank outside the Museum:

Conway by Massimo Foti, on Flickr

Inside the Museum there is a scale model of it, labeled as "Conway". I asked the Museum's crew about it, at first they were unable to identify it, but they called somebody else and told me it's a "Conway".

To be sincere, the turret looks too big compared to the standard Centurion tank, just to hold a 120mm gun. Especially if you compare it to a Conqueror.

Then I saw Trevor's page here:
preservedtanks.com/Pro...p;Select=4

The FV 4005 used a a 183 mm gun. Based on Trevor's source and the fact that the gun looks bigger than a 120mm, I am almost sure Trevor got it right. Do we have additional info?

Looking online I've fund this:
arcaneafvs.com/conway.html

Yes its the Fv4005 Series 2 (Series 1 had the open mount)

Easiest way to distinguish it from the Conway is that the Conway has a cast mantlet.

Yes, Bovington has a Conway too, but it's currently in storage:

Unique ID 2040: Bovington Conway

Bovington has changed its database records again, so the links on their profile pages no longer work. I'm in the process of creating a system that will get around this - for now you can access them here:

FV4005 Turret Record: preservedtanks.com/Red...?Record=13
Conway Record: preservedtanks.com/Red...Record=163

Here's a picture of Conway to compare with the top picture above, from when it was on public display in 1982 (and a check of the new forum photo link change):
