M60 in Joplin MO
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M60 in Joplin MO

Hi everyone,

Been a while. Had to do some traveling so took a few minor detours to document some M60's while on the way.

Here is M60 SN 368, Located at VFW Post #534, 110 East Veterans Way in Joplin Missouri. Grid is 37.116755, -94.510795.

M60 368

Here are the rear hull and deck numbers.

SN 368

These are the weld numbers on the rear hull, CF-874 and DT-863. Usually these are very close to the SN for early to mid generation M60's.

Hull weld numbers

Here is the tow lug number, it is much closer to the weld numbers.

Tow lug SN 868

Pretty sure this is her original number before getting rebuilt. Explains a lot. Seen a couple other M60's of the same generation that the weld numbers were way off from the Serial number or corresponding Registration number. Looks like they just misread the SN and stamped what they thought was correct in the deck. The lug has not been ground smooth like other rebuilds and the numbers run across, common for 3 digit tanks. Rebuild 3 digits usually run top to bottom and the lug is ground smooth. This tank has been in service a long time too. Has the armored air cleaner units. The most obvious though is she has an M68A1 tube, same as for the M1. Seen a few others like this too, all were used by the National Guard up to the late 80's early 90's. If you ignore the festive attachment you can see the bevels cut into the muzzle for the MRS used by M1's.

M68A1 tube

Wonder how many other tanks had their Serial Numbers altered/changed? Another thing I need to look for now. Will post the other tanks later.
