M60A3 details
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M60A3 details

hello,
can anyone id this unit (pic at bottom), or did you even happen to serve in this unit? can someone interpet the various numbers and stampings on this Patton? the data plate on the trans lists it as being overhauled at anniston in dec of 89.
on the starboard side of the turret there is a larger welding mark, had something been there or is it just part of the turret manufacturing.
the suspension, the torsion bar arms, they are different on top (some show cut marks), why is that?

Looks like 38th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 246th Armor Regiment. Most likely a National Guard division.

Shawn,
Where is this tank and did you get the serial number? I also am wondering if the data plate your talking about was actually the final drive rebuild tag unless you were able to open the grills. A final drive tag would be located outside the hull on the final drive between the sprocket and hull. I can't view the pictures so I'm not sure what your mean by "cuts on the torsion bar arms".

In Shawn's pics there is a 4398A stamped in the hull rear or side (I'm not sure, it's a fairly 'tight' picture) just below another number that has been X'ed out. I think from previous threads that the number is a new Anniston S/N and the Xed out one was the original (If my memory is correct)

Bob, you would be correct about the Anniston rebuild information, at least as far as what I've been told in the past as well in my research of M60's. I tried to save and look at that picture closer and it appears the original serial was 2249 possibly. What I have found about M60 production is as follows;
Initially produced in 1961, 15,000 M60's were built between 1961 and 1983. There were 5,400 older models converted to M60A3 standards from 1983-1990. Army Master Data File Acquisition Price was $1,291,865. Normal life expectancy was to be 20 years.
That number of 4398A, would indicate a late model rebuild, as oppossed to the two M60A3's at Ft Irwin on display that are number 1778A and 1780A which were aerly rebuilds.
