ok uk gauge is 00, i think a full set with oval track engine and control units runs around £450 , that gets you everything to run it, all 00 gauge stock will fit them, i think the UK 00 = USA HO model gauge.. they run purely on steam from boiler but track runs the power for heater element and control....
cant wait for bday lol

Yeow! $700 and you still gotta' get steam up? I think I'll just have to be happy with my S gauge 'Murican Flyer #290 with "smoke and choo-choo". Laughing

Just spent an hour writing about Granddad Shades, who spent his life driving the real things, but lost the whole lot when I pressed the 'preview' button.
Sad
Ah well.

Sad

Been there...

Usually I do a copy after a long post just in case. I must admit I haven't had it happen on this board, but I did have it happen on some others including Com Central boards in the past and old habits die hard...lol

Well it's not really a story, and it's more a short memory about my whole family, triggered by this thread. This is the new shorter version (lol).

I started out by saying that people that live near the railway lines of today complain about the noise, vibration and dirt. The old steamers were probably noisier, and certainly dirtier, but I can't remember anyone complaining.

I still own a 00 Hornby model steam engine that Granddaddy Shades bought me so long ago that I can't remember it, but early 60's anyway. I think it was a Christmas present and it was a representation of his own engine at the time. He retired rather than re-train (oops, sry heheh) to drive the 'new' electric / diesels.

Granddad was a steam driver all his life, working out of several London yards but most famously Covent Garden before it became what it is today. Whenever I went to visit (which was often) I would always travel home from Clapham Junction and he would always know the driver of the train taking me home, and they all knew him. I would always ride up in the cab with the driver.

My Dad used to fire for him sometimes, while he was doing his engineering apprenticeship (he later went on to work in the aircraft design industry and, at one point, worked as a designer/draughtsman for Barnes Wallace which I believe was at Hawker's when they were still at Brooklands in Surrey, UK and before they were swallowed up by British Aerospace. He still can't talk about the work he did during that period. Wink ).

One of my earliest life memories is of my Dad taking me to meet my Granddad as he and his fireman were warming the engine up.
I can't remember travelling there or back, just seeing the engine steaming gently in the yard and my Granddad's white teeth smiling through his already sooty face from the cab. While they were waiting, I got to have the traditional steam driver's breakfast of eggs, bacon, pork sausages, and toast, all served with a coal sauce, direct from the fireman's shovel, with my Mum and Grandma shouting, "You can't give him THAT!".
lol
Best breakfast ever. If you ever get the chance to do the same, keep an open-mind and ignore the coal, it actually tastes great. It may not be the healthiest breakfast in the world but there isn't a better tasting one.

I'm going to be changing it soon...just in case you want it to 'tweak' to your liking...:D

Here's a site I found for model trains and it has a ton of tutorials. Good site I think if you're into models or trains...

The best I can do is one of these. AF (1955 vintage) #290 locomotive and tender (with smoke and "choo-choo"!)....plus 5 cars and original "rubber roadbed" mounted track and various period accessories. All works, too.
"S" gauge....heavy sucker. Survived many a spectacular crash following sabotage attempts by the 101st Special Operations Platoon (Plastic) OPCON'ed to the Wawona Terrace Division (Ringhand-Provisional) under the command of then Col. Kibbey.

I love the smell of ozone in the morning.....
