My first question would be, "do you intend to mostly fly in single (boring) or multiplay?"

If you want online fightin', you must be VERY careful with regard to what aircraft you choose and choose to fly from among the many downloads because the sim REQUIRES absolute compatibility between player in multiplay (to make cheats a bit more difficult, though some eventually surfaced). This, IMO, was one of the BIG limits of the sim and the way addon's were done...mismatches occur VERY easily in games with non-compatible setups...and partially explains the "flight" of many players to that other sim, where addon's are controlled by the originator, in a manner of speaking.

For my "money" (it's free) I most valued the addon scenery of Interlaken, Switzerland (and somehwere else) because it made for good mountain fights. It is unaffected by compatibility because the game hosts' server determines the locale....others don't have to have it, they "use" yours if you're the host. I think it came from "Justflight" website. (Google for it).

You can almost group simmers in CFS3 into the "modders" and the "non-modders, compatibility-wise, which is why most tournaments wound up using either stock aircraft, or ones specially prepared for that purpose that contestants had to have, like the NGNG planes (see other thread here).

JG-300, one of the largest and more enduring squads, I'm proud to say, eventually came to the conclusion that requiring any downloaded planes for tournaments was to be abandoned due to compatibility issues. Addon's for FS200X is a breeze...it's a PITA for CFS3. You either spend a lot of time using stockers and accept the performance diffs between certain aircraft and learn to exploit the benefits of what you fly, or you spend a lot of time in the hangar making sure your files are just so to avoid mismatches. We opted for the former and lived with the disadvantages that the stock Axis aircraft impose...and we did well enough to be proud of.

I imagine Stoopy (Captain Windy that he is) will have more to say 'bout this...and say it better. Besides, he's my boss in CFS3! Wink

Actually that sum s it up pretty well, except make sure you at least get the 3.1 update for CFS3, that addresses some performance issues AND is required for multiplayer compatability since everyone else has it.
