Post subject: Taking the plunge?

Ok, so after doing some research think my next rig will be home built. Have everything lined up but the case and was looking for some advice.

Not looking for disco lights or anything like that, just a good practical case.

Thanks for any help.

I know you said no "disco lights" BUT,

I built my rig in a Coolermaster Wavemaster.
Great case, would do it again.

Shortly after I built a less-well stocked one for my nephew and niece.
As it was them and they were very young disco lights was a plus.

Little did I know what a great case this thing turned out to be.
They've changed the spec' now so you'll need to swap out the psu and get a better one.
However the rig itself is one of those rare gems you find by accident and if I were doing mine again I would use one of these.
It's outrageously good for the money and it's next to nothing to buy.

===

Will have to post a link to it when I get onto my own rig as I can't find it on Google - The same maker (I-Cute) does other cases but the ones I've seen aren't as good.

What? No lights??! Think how GREAT that'd look with the disco ball already hanging in the room! The lil' points of light flickering and reflecting off that Telecaster....

Things to consider:

1) Cooling - Will it give good airflow over your CPU / chipset / RAM.

2) Build - Will it make your build easier (make sure you get a removeable mobo tray, and all the stand-offs). My mobo tray has loads of space behind it so, when you refit it, you can hide all the cabling behind it. This makes it look neater but, more importantly, gets it out of the way of the airflow which helps keep everything inside cool.

3) Size - Is it the right size? If you have an ATX motherboard, you'll be wanting an ATX case to fit it in or it may not fit at all. Will your graphic cards fit onto your motherboard once it's loaded into the case?

4) Looks - Can you live with it, aesthetically?

5) Disco lights - You may not like 'em but horses for courses. I was the same as you once. My advice now would be to get a case with a side window and some form of interior lighting. Saves you forever opening the case up to inspect it for dust or to see if something's disconnected. My Wavemaster has a single blue cathode for this purpose. Cost? Burger all. Value? Bigger than you'd think.

Here's one with no lights and that certainly seems functional:

ATX Case

Ahhhhh Mick Ronson!
Now there's an under-rated guitarist if ever there wuz one.

LMAO @ Stoop

Hey Fr8y, THIS is the case I was talkin about. This is from an English site (I think) and I can't find it anywhere else now so they may have stopped makin' it. If they have it's a real shame. It was dead easy to use, a steel case with removable mobo tray and front cover and my nephew and niece's temp's are half of those I'm getting out of my Wavemaster and they're using theirs for gaming and all sorts.

Hope you can find one, and don't dismiss the lights. I kept an open mind and find they do actually have a function. Having said that, I don't like fan lights as they can be noisy. They aren't on the I-Cute above but you can always replace with normal fans and use a cathode. They're really cheap and easy to fit. You don't need "disco" lights to get a nice case that's useable.

My current computer was built 'a while' ago and I used a Thermaltake case. Nice case I must say. Built very heavy, lots of room and 8 cooling fans. Smile

This is the one I have now...

Fromn Fr8y's initial post I've taken it that he wasn't looking for anything fancy.

If this is wrong, the thermaltakes are great builder cases (slightly on the weighty side). My Wavemaster would be another good one although they have been superceded now by better and less expensive cases. Lian Li is another good name.

These are all from the upper end of the general p.c. market.

I don't need a fancy case but willing to keep my options open.

Main concerns are air Flow and room/setup.
