Microsoft has revealed work is under way to unify its different Windows operating systems into a single OS.

Chief executive Satya Nadella made the announcement while briefing analysts following Tuesday's earnings update.

"We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes," he said.

The firm also confirmed it had recently scrapped a new type of tablet.

"During the quarter, we reassessed our product roadmap and decided not to ship a new form factor that was under development," said Amy Hood, the firm's chief financial officer.

Leaks had indicated that the firm had originally planned to launch the Surface Mini in May - a small tablet running the Windows RT system, a version of the OS designed for ARM-based chips.

Mr Nadella did not mention Windows RT during the conference call, instead referring to the three existing versions of Windows that would be merged as "one for phone, one for tablets and PCs, [and] one for Xbox".

That ought to just REALLY screw up the next desktop PC. I have a desktop PC to work and play games on and the OS should be kept simple. I am not going to make calls on it or take the desktop PC with me for GPS. Windows 8 is really screwed up in my opinion because they tried to make work on different platforms. It probably does work great on tablets and phones but not worth a sh*t for the desktop. It really could not cost that much to keep them separate. I just wish the da*n programming geeks were more like the ordinary people who are going to use their product. Why they think "This should be better" is usually 98% only better for their way of thinking not ours.
IF it ain't broke do NOT fix it!!! Sorry just had to express my feelings on this and all other software upgrades that make life more difficult instead of easy. Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil
