Post subject: Operating Sys on Flash Drive?

My daughter bought her 2 kids each a Leveno Flex 3 laptop for Christmas and sent them to me to set up for them. Kinda disapointing little laptops. 11 inch screen, 1.6 Celeron proceesor, 2 gigs of ram and only 27 gig hard drive. Windows 10 and Leveno programs only left about 15 gigs of hard drive left which after installing the IMO proggies that are needed to maintain the puter...ie AVG, Malwarebytes, Smart Defrag and a few more there is only 5 gigs left and the dang thing slowed way down Confused . I would like to know if possible to install proggies on Flash Drive or SD card and what it takes to make that happen if at all. There is no DVD or CD drive. You can not add ram as what is installed is soldiered to MB and no slots. Specs here:

shop.lenovo.com/us/en/...flex-3-11/

I can buy a 1 TB flash drive for about $12 if this is possible. I know the 2 gig of ram is going to kill things but they will have to live with it.

I haven't done it on an external, Homey.
But I don't see why you couldn't.

I have partitioned internal drives and kept the primary partition for Windows then put everything else on other partition(s).
This tends to make the whole system run faster.

Once connected, the computer will see an external drive as if it were an internal drive and install procedures should be the same as normal, except that you 'browse' to the external drive.

If you're installing Windows to an 'external' drive you would need to activate it as the 'Boot' drive in the BIOS.
Otherwise it will default to the system C: drive (which won't have the operating system or any boot instructions and so, wouldn't boot).

Some of the registry files may still default to the C: drive anyway (not sure), but that shouldn't be an issue while the 'external' drive is connected to the system.

I believe I am going to have nothing but the OS on the C drive and install all the programs on a 3.0 flash drive. Will let you know if this works as discribed above. THNX Shades

So far been able to install 5 out of 7 programs to the flashdrive and they work! Cool Biggest program is MS Office 2010 with everything office has to offer! Laughing It is a 3.0 flashdrive so not sure if it would work in the 2.0 slot and have no plans on tryn...lol. Set up MS One Drive for the kids to have online cloud storage also. Maybe these little laptops will be a great learning tools for them and a place for them to do their homework!
