Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian singer whose ringing, pristine sound set a standard for operatic tenors of the postwar era, died early this morning at his home in Modena, in northern Italy. He was 71.

This is an unfathomable loss to the many lovers of Italian Opera that form the backbone of EURO Squadron. I know many EURO's, in particular my beloved (ex) CO, sincerely enjoyed the seemingly endless hours of Italian Opera they heard in the background while I was on TS.

Please join me in mourning the loss of this National Treasure of Italy.

In England even the non-cultured, footbaling, yobbery, know and admire Pav' if only for one song; Nessun Dorma, adopted as the theme music of Italia 1990 (the Italian Football World Cup 1990).
