Post subject: For the radial engine gearheads....

Terrific video(s) in two parts explaining all the intricate bits of a radial engine (built in wood!). Don't miss Pt. II when he spins it up with a cordless drill to typical operational rpm for an engine of this type. I found the valve/cam ring explanations especially helpful.

Both links are posted in case your video doesn't advance automatically as it should.

Thanks for posting this - it was very interesting and informative. I also got a lot out of the explanation of the cam ring.

Impressive effort on the woodworking too.

Now I guess he needs to fill the crankcase with linseed oil, run a line with some wood alcohol to the carb, and fire that baby up! Laughing

or he could build it into a bong that easily services up to nine, if they'll abide.

The Dude abides, as long as no oil leaks into the lower cylinders... Mr. Green

Pop quiz: Do you know where that expression originates (and I don't mean from the Big Lebowski)? IOW, where did "The Dude" get it? No Googling, you should know this an aging hipster like yourself. Wink

Honoring the No Googling stipulation: Nah, ya got me. I can think of a few references and uses of the term back in the early 70's but I cannot pin it down to any specific source.

I'll probably kick myself on the butt, but do tell... I know this is gonna be good!

Shame.....SHAME!

*Ahem* Even the most casual of Deadheads knows this one. "Sugar Magnolia"....(documented to have been performed something like 621 times in concert). Best instrument solo with possible exception of "Scarlet Begonias".

"Sweet blossom come on, under the willow, we can have high times if you'll abide
We can discover the wonders of nature, rolling in the rushes down by the riverside."

The best version is "The Grateful Dead Movie" (which is awesome), but couldn't find a good copy on Youtube. Comes up a lot on "Palladium" channel on Dish network, among others.

Thanks for the info. That would explain it! I'm the first to admit I'm not what you could consider a Deadhead. For whatever reason I didn't get into them too terribly much, having only bought two albums, Terrapin Station (which didn't grab me) and then In The Dark, from much later - dug the first two tracks on that album especially, though.

I didn't really "get it" with the Dead until well into my '40's. What it takes is to hear some of the monster instrumental solos and riffs that might or might not be accompanied by a "song". Truth be told, singing was not their strong point, but what did it for me was one of the bazillion pirate recordings.

I strongly recommend the previously mentioned "Grateful Dead Movie", which can be purchased as DVD or recorded off Palladia (which also airs a Bad Company concert from Hollywood, FL that is not to be missed). The Dead are an acquired tasted and I was likewise late to the game.

Cool find. It's the first video that actually made the workings of a radial engine understandable to me.
